Jem7GMC custom guitar built

Winter is coming and I just found a green swirled OOTS JEM body at 'ebait'. Exactly the HH configuration I always wanted on a JEM.
Luckily a day later I got a beautiful JEM7VWH replacement neck from 97! It's got an ebony fretboard which I personally like better than rosewood.

Starting now to build up my JEM7GMC. Body and neck still need some minor work but nothing I couldn't handle. I am very excited...

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

Finished painting the headstock to match with the body. Was a hard task and had to practice with some wood plates.

As I was waiting for the paint to cure I designed the pickguard. Will be done next week.

Next: checking the frets and maybe some fretboard care...

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

Did you swirl the headstock, or hand paint it? It looks great either way

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

As tempting a real swirl was but I decided against. Too much risc of failing at getting a good match. So I hand painted with a very steady hand...

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

The scallops on the old ebony necks weren't very wide. But with a file and some sanding papers you can get them to a modern feel very easily...

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

I am always fascinated to see these kind of projects. I just love watching the progression. I have zero talent or ability to do such a thing, though I do wish I did. Like you, an HH config is perfect for me. Being able to put together exactly what I want, as well as being able to get a swirl the way I want, would be fantastic. So far so good on your project, and keep posting updates. I truly love watching these come together.

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

The guitar is resting at the moment. I'm waiting for the pickups to come in. Should be within the next 14 days.

Pics will follow...

I'm very excited to finish the project! This is my very first guitar project and with every step in the process I had to practice with some wood first. One thing I realized is that I had to put a lot work into it so far. Way more than I expected and some parts were very tricky. For me the whole process of building a guitar shines in a completely new light now. My highest respect to all the guitar builders who build a quality guitar from scratch!

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

The first pickguard I had to trash!
It was nearly done as I realized that the cavity for the electrics didn't allow to put the switch and volume pot in the standard positions.
Couldn't enlarge the cavity because I don't have the tools and the finish of the body would have been affected. So I compromised and moved the position of the volume pot a bit. The first tests showed that it is just ok to reach with my pinky finger. The 5 way switch had to be moved a lot. I positioned it to be in a natural right hand radius while playing. This led me to drop the tone pot. I don't use it anyway. Though I will substitute it with a 500k resistor internally.

Not quite the style I had in mind but for me a compromise I can live with and still love the project JEM.

So I made a new pickguard and drilled the holes in the body - with lots of sweat on my forehead

Cavity shielding was a piece of cake...

Re: Jem7GMC custom guitar built

So, finally got it finished!
Over 200 hours of work, a horrible waiting time for the pickups (11 weeks!) and some compromises I had to deal with. But in the end I'm very happy with the result. The green lady plays like a dream and roars like a gorilla! Totally worth the work!

Body: mahogany
Neck: '97 7VWH with ebony fretboard
Trem: Lo Pro Edge
Hardware: Cosmo Black
Neck Pickup: Evolution
Bridge Pickup: Evo 2
