Jem7v VS. PRS Custom 24 CAGE MATCH!!!!

I've had a 7v for several years now and I've been very happy with it, the other day however I played a PRS Custom 24.

Yikes it sounded amazing. on every pickup position, through both amps I tried. Played like a dream. Looked gorgeous. GAS GAS GAS GAS GAS GAS GAS.

Then I saw the price..... egads.

Jem - Pros
Better inlay
Double locking trem
That sweeet sweet sweet neck evo
Handle! (I love the freaking handle)
Angled input jack (I love this too.)

Cons
It's steve vai's guitar, not mine.
Inferior wood (alder/basswood)
Bolt on neck
Sloppy fretboard edges (this has always annoyed me to death)

PRS - Pros
Superior wood (Mahogany/maple top)
Superior craftsmanship (I couldn't find a flaw on the instrument, and I looked hard)
Better tone? (I know this is an opinion, but this guitar just freaking sang, from the 1st fret through the 24th)
Set neck

Cons
No double locking floyd (and I'm a floyd whore)
Expensive... $3000

So, I had this amazing experience with this PRS and it's made me consider selling my Jem to pay for one. I'd love to hear the thoughts of some folks with more experience with PRS than myself. I've played exactly 2 of them, and never really thought about buying one until now. I realize this is the Ibanez forum, but I have to think that there's other folks here like myself who have a whole stack of ibanez guitars. I actually have 3, my Jem, a RG2550 with a dimarzio fred and a sustainiac, and an old (awesome) 520 with the usual tonezone/paf pro combo... so what would I really lose by unloading my awesome 7v?

Any thoughts/opinions/advice is always greatly appreciated!

Re: Jem7v VS. PRS Custom 24 CAGE MATCH!!!!

I know that bduersch is one guy who went PRS from (VERY nice Prestige/J-Custom/JEM) Ibanez and never looked back...but as always, YMMV. I have always found PRS guitars to sound INCREDIBLE, and play really well, but I have never been able to convince myself to spend that much money on one. I have been looking at the Carvin California models recently, might try one of those out.

$3000
for a guitar with trem technology invented in 1957
I don't think so

It sort of sounds like you made up your mind.

I don't necessarily think that the wood is "better", but you clearly love the sound etc.

I wouldn't sell the Jem though. Of their type, they are the best around.

Manticore is right, Trem technology should be the sole deciding factor in purchasing a guitar.

It looks like you already have the trem thing taken care of with your other Ibanez guitars, so what would you really be losing by ditching the Jem and moving to the PRS?

You would probably gain more from having a different guitar in the group than having more of the same old stuff.

Thanks for the replies! I really want to hear from someone who owns a PRS and can tell me all about it!

And I officially strike the "inferior alder/basswood" reference from the record. I surely didn't mean to offend anyone.

Re: Jem7v VS. PRS Custom 24 CAGE MATCH!!!!

I guess I can comment a bit on this as there's a JEM7VWH and a Custom 24 in my household.

The Custom 24 is a well made guitar, but it's far from perfect.

- The bridge is suspect. It's an antiquated design and PRS bridges are notorious for tarnishing.

- The neck heel is a bit cumbersome, particularly if you tend to play high up the neck a lot.

- The stock pickups felt brittle and weak.

- The sticky gloss finished neck is a significant step down from the feel of the satin JEM.

That's not to say the PRS isn't the right choice for you, but it's definitely not perfect and it's not the one I'd pick if the criteria is anything other than quality of paint job or likely resale value.

That said, it makes a pretty good rhythm guitar and it is clearly well made. But for the money, you'd think it'd do more than look pretty.

Re: Jem7v VS. PRS Custom 24 CAGE MATCH!!!!

You left out the jems upper fret access, scallops on the top 4 frets, pickup options, and input jack location all things I prefer as a player.

The Prs tremolo is pretty weak, BUT I do prefer the old school nut for convenience and tone. I still cant live without my locking tremolos though. I've enjoyed playing prs guitars myself, ultimately though its an antiquated design and I like the newer features on the ibanez alot more.

Re: Jem7v VS. PRS Custom 24 CAGE MATCH!!!!

once you decide you don't need a trem that stays in tune
there is a lot of electrics out there to choose from
i can't say that PRS is really at the top of that list
it might be
