Smile Jem7vwh + what non-Carvin amp for Vai sound

Hey Buddies,

A long time Vai fan and JEM searcher, I finally found one at a cracking price and took delivery last friday. So far so good. Am impressed with the build quality and the range in the tone and gain from the pots and pup switch. Previously my sound was using Epi Les Paul + seymour duncan alnico pros through a Peavey Bandit 112 transtube with Boss DD3 for a touch of delay. I loved my sound and it was thick, crunchy and saturated as I wanted.

Now with the JEM I'm need to work again on finding my sound as it has different dynamics of its own. Obviously I'm after a Vai sound ;-) though.

The closest I came was playing the new Laney 5W valve amp (surprisingly loud) but these cost 550 in Uk. But it has a really warm, overdriven, saturated sound such that bridge pup was roaring, neck pup was warm and bluesy and the middle pup was jangley and strat like.

What have you guys found best to play your JEMs through for the VAI sound that surely we're all craving :-)

thanks

Re: Jem7vwh + what non-Carvin amp for Vai sound

Depends on what Vai era you're after. I've had good Passion & Warfare results with a Universe and a Boss DS-1 through a Marshal DSL50, and good Sex & Religion tones using my Jem direct into the Marshall.

At the moment I'm using various guitars into the DSL50 through an MXR/Custom Audio Electronics Boost/Overdrive. I'm not aiming for Vai tone, just different levels and magnifications of the Marshall's own tone and gain.

Cesar Huesca can nail every one of Vai's tone with a Mesa Rectifier recording preamp into a little marshall.

Yeah I watched many of Cesar's clips and man he is awesome, he really nails the tones and the switching of sounds mid song (Boston Rain Melody) and gets really close to the exact notes as far as I can tell. He's the best I've seen by some margin. An hes younger than me darn it!

I'm really looking for the fairly recent Vai like Alive in an Ultra world live sound.

I've tried a few DS1s and I know he's had them in his rig but I just think they sound awful on their own in the amps I've tried them with (Peaveys, Marshalls, Fender).

I guess what I need is a low wattage tube amp, with a 12" speaker in it, drive it hard and stick a Boss DD3 in the effects loop and then I'll be there.

Does he use the Boss CS3 or not?

I also love his Live sound on Alive in an Ultra World, it's so musical. He's using Carvin Legacys there, I own one myself, and they are loud puppies !! too loud for the places I play in. And they have to be cranked to sound good, but Steve doesn't have any problems there

Re: Jem7vwh + what non-Carvin amp for Vai sound

Just thinking non-carvin because they're really loud and expensive. As mainly a bedroom player I need something I don't have to crank up to rehearsal room levels to get a nice sound from. Ideally I'd have a lovely barn out the back and make it into my practise room with a wall of cabs behind me...! need to win the lottery first though...

Re: Jem7vwh + what non-Carvin amp for Vai sound

I have a Carvin Legacy, and first of all while it is ridiculously loud at times, contrary to popular belief (on the Carvin forum), the Legacy sounds GREAT at lower volumes. As for the price issue, Carvins are competitively priced compared to the rest of the market. I was looking at a Peavey JSX before i got my Legacy, and that would have costed me $1,999.99 plus taxes where I live. The Legacy costed me $1,340 shipping included to arrive at my door. I would recommend Carvin before all other amps really, especially considering the price. I'm not saying they are the best amps on Earth, but for the price you pay, you do actually get a hell of a deal.

Appreciate what your saying.
Have you considered the X100B?
It has a 25 Watt setting and will produce awesome tones even at low volumes.

You can get the combo for Just over 700 in the UK here:

I got my head there. Really nice guy to deal with as well.

Completely agree...Carvins are awesome!

Here's my other one! Bought the head on fleabay for 300, had it recovered & a custom cab made to match, I fitted new tubes & re-bias it & now better than new!

Re: Jem7vwh + what non-Carvin amp for Vai sound

I think it's been proven that his amp sound is not particularly hard to get. The guitar and pickups seems to matter much more than the amp and itself when it comes's to Steve's tone.

That line about "the Vai sound that we're surely all craving" went over my head completely. I love Steve and all but the only guitar tones of his that I ever cared for were on Passion and Warfare and, as I recently discovered, a lot of that tone is the PAF PRO's.

Yikes!!! Why would anyone want anyone else's sound but one that was their own sound??? Besides, real tone comes from the left hand. You want to sound like Vai? You're going to hafta kidnap Vai and have a team of surgeons transplant his left hand onto your left arm.

Very true! I have hands that look almost the same as his and I cannot, for the life of me, play with my fingers positioned like he does. I'm sure everybody has seen the way he lays his fingers almost flat. Things like that play a big part in the way the axe sings.
