Jems set up with 10s

I've recently converted to 10s on all of my guitars. To do this, I've had to add a 4th spring to each guitar to accomodate. There has to be a way for this to work with only 3 springs. The trem is too stiff with 4 springs. Am I an idiot? Thanks for any replies (and I don't mean to the idiot question ;-D).

Re: Jems set up with 10s

I had my DBK and currently my BFP set up with 10's and 3 springs.
Are you using the 'arrow' or 'V' configuration with the springs? That definately adds more tension. You still do need to crank the trem claw screws in pretty deep though, but nothing out of the ordinary.

10-46's or 10-52's?

Re: Jems set up with 10s

I know you probably meant this for the original poster, but for reference I'm using 10-46. Specifically D'Addario XL 10's.

BTW Jammy- nice true bypass looper... coulda used one of those on a Choralflange before I sold it! I'm still getting used to clicking on people's names to see if they have a website to visit

Re: Jems set up with 10s

4 springs and 10-48 Ernie Ball (have 10-49 Elixirs on some guitars and 10-48 Blue Steels on one) here for as long as I can remember.
10s have to be at higher tension to be tuned to pitch so you'll need more tension on the springs to keep the trem level.
It's not the springs that are tight - it's the new strings as they have changed the physics of the whole instrument.
Some people hate that and that's why they play 9s or 8s - me, I love it so all my guitars (all 25.5") have 10s on them and my dedicated Eb guitar has 11s.

Re: Jems set up with 10s

I'm using 10-46. Out of all of them, only one is set up using 10s and 3 springs, and that trem is a bit less stiff. It is because of this lone guitar that I am preplexed. :-(

Re: Jems set up with 10s

...so you are or you aren't using the 'V' shape with your springs and screwing the trem claw in further...

Re: Jems set up with 10s

Sorry Beast. I was not using the "V" shape, rather the 3 straight across, and my screws were all the way into wood on the trouble guitars.
