Joe Satriani Action & Tremolo Range

I was reading Joe's site and noticed it says he likes his action set to 2/64ths of an inch at the 12th fret. That is ABSURDLY low. How is he able to get any pull up range on his tremolo with action so low?!?!

That's 17 years old, he's definitely a bit higher now and playing 10's in Db.

Wow... that's insane! I'd love to see what it feels like to play a guitar like that. Though I'm probably too heavy on the pick hand for that action...

I think that's a hair lower than Rich set the action on my white JEM!

I'm kidding.

But seriously, I'm not.

Rich, how do you know he has switched to 10s in Db with a higher action? Source?

Because he's Rich. If he's wrong, Jemsite will be along shortly to let him know and he's the only one allowed to do so.

Re: Joe Satriani Action & Tremolo Range

Joe had his frets shaved to a compound radius from around the 10th fret up to 22nd (now 24th I guess), going flatter as you go up the neck. By having the frets get lower as he goes up the neck, he can have the action much lower before it frets out when he bends a string. IIRC, he said it still buzzed a bit, but it was a compromise he could live with. The primary goal was to have even volume all over the neck for legato and two-handed stuff (as opposed to the booming bass strings on a traditionally setup guitar). Not sure if that's relevant anymore given he doesn't really do the tapping stuff so much these days.

Anyone know when they made the switch to the Jescar 55090 and if they are still using it on JS models?
