Found this on the internets.

The hair on his arms?

Look at the shirt though. Inspiration for the design ??

Re: Joe's original Sig before the markers

I was going to say since the headstock look tilted, that he may have been holding just a black Radius. But look at the control knob/toggle switch placement. Just like his original. And not like the R series had.

It could be a really early picture of it. Before the neck replacement.

That is from an 88 "catalog" called the Artist Spirit. That was the promo shots taken when he first received the completed guitar. The short was painted by Donnie Hunt, who painted most of his stage clothes.

There was no neck replacement, that's the Roadstar neck it's always had.

The lipstick, disturbing.

Ah.. I guess it's an optical illusion then. Never understood why Satriani likes the straight headstock design. Other than he was used to it with a Fender. It just looks weird to me.

What gets me are the Ibby's with angled headstocks that still have string retainers!! Always just a hassle when changing strings....

I didn't spot the Donnie shirt, that's kinda cool! I always wear a white shirt that my sister doodles on to gigs. Now I feel unoriginal.

I really hoped I wasn't seeing lipstick. Guess I was wrong..

I don't mind the string retainers. The locking nut device is a bigger PITA than the retainers.

There's a reason Vai still uses them?

How else would you expect to get the strings to remain in tune when using the tremolo?

Re: Joe's original Sig before the markers

Also has the standard Radius output jack location. Appears to be a very slightly modified Radius.

Re: Joe's original Sig before the markers

It's a quite heavily modified Radius. I have a picture of the original drawing with the R outline and the JS outline inside it. It's about 1/8" smaller in all dimensions, thinner horns, more scooped lower cutaway. What's funny is instead of building from scratch they modified an R body even to the point of filling the single rout.

Re: Joe's original Sig before the markers

Well I assume that guitar would have been built by Mace Bailey? The Radius seems to be the least straightforward body to build of all that old stuff, so I can see what they might have modified a Radius.

So does the production JS follow the contours of the prototype body? I've never seen a Radius in person.

I wish they would make the Radius again. :-/

That's usually what prototypes are for, but I haven't seen Blackdog since, like, 1993
