JS10th tone

I recently saw some thread here and someone was talking about JSs and said the tenth of course is THE satch sound. And it's not uncommon to say that. I however get frustrated when I hear that because it so isn't. Perhaps compared to a Les Paul or Fender a tenth sounds satriani-like but compared to any Satch with a wood body it really doesn't. I find the JS tenth tone and sustain to be quite disappointing and so does Joe Satriani or else I think he'd have used them when they were new. Anybody with both a JS10th and a wood JS want to weigh in? This may just be my personal pet peeve but we will see. (I'll add though that I like the tenth's tone better than the Crystal Planet which is my least favorite from a players perspective).

Re: JS10th tone

I'll weigh in. I've got the 10th and the 1000.

And yeah through a nice valve amp, the 10th is the Satch tone in a shiny, chrome plated box. i don't have a problem with the sustain, but them I'm usually trying to fly from one note to another as quickly as possible when using my 10th.

I don't think we can say for sure the reason for Joe not using them, you're probably right in that through the rest of his rig it sounds different, but to me, through my rig, JS10th = Joe's sound, straight out of the case.

Re: JS10th tone

Why didn't he use them? Well, he did do a leson series using one. Otherwise why would he use them live when he was still playing JS2's?

I agree in that I believe the wood bodies sound closer to Joe, but every JS has the essence of Joe's tone.

Re: JS10th tone

I guess if someone said what is the satch sound I'd pick a 1000 or 1200. Or a JS1. But certainly down the list would be the 10th. But once the 2 got stolen if it was good enough to his tastes he could have replaced them with 10ths live. I personally think maybe he doesn't like the 10ths but maybe I just want to impose my opinion on him. Who knows.

Re: JS10th tone

Only Pearly was stolen, he continued to play Chromeboy until he got the alumiboy's [forerunner of the PRM] and then the PRM's and 1200/1000's since. He no longer takes any guitars on the road he cares about, and he only had 1 10th and it had a special commemoration plaque to him at the 22nd.

Re: JS10th tone

what's weird though is that he has a tenth in that young guitar gallery with no plaque, the number is there but I don't remember offhand, but the tenth with his special inlay isn't in that collection. Know why?

Re: JS10th tone

I forgot about that one. He might have bought it. He got on a kick for a while where he wanted to add a few special ones while he could, one of the Crystals in that layout I sold him.

Re: JS10th tone

Yeah according to the photos of his collection in whatever year that was (it was pre PRM but he had the proto, whatever you know which one I mean) In that he has JS10th 370 but there's no sign of the one from the Crystal Planet cover. Do you know what happened to it?

Re: JS10th tone

Probably just not shown. It's not a complete resonne' of everything he owned. He has stuff stashed in rehersal spaces, storage, studios, etc. Those are probably just what he dragged out of his closets

Re: JS10th tone

Damn. To think there's even more. Lucky Bastard. Anyway...I love the JS10th visually. But truth is I don't like them so much to play. In fact because of it I did all kinds of mods on my JS tenth that's all scratched up because since it's tone was questionable I didn't mind messing with it. I wouldn't touch my wood ones.

Re: JS10th tone

If they have some lifeswap show I'd gladly polish some of his guitars while he gets bitten everyday. Oh wait he doesn't polish them, Mike Manning does!! No the man's my hero. I'm just joking.
