Js6 With P-90 (the Mohog guitar!)

Hello everybody,

In the video "Reel Satriani", at the end, we can see satch playing on a JS with oil finish and loaded with P-90's pickups. It was used during most of the recording of the album "joe Satriani". I assume it is this guitar called "Mohog"

i did some research on it, but i can't find what were the pickups he used ! This is really a toughie, but maybe someone have this in a very old issue of a guitar mag, from that time (1995) ?

Here is an alternative question : Let's assume I can get my hand on a JS6 or a JS6000 (loaded with the famous PAF Pro and Fred humbuckers), and wanted to swap them by P-90's, which model would you recommend ?

I know that it will shock some satch fans, but i looooved satch's sound on the Joe Satriani album, and for me, this is guitar is fantastic !

Thanks everyone !

Re: Js6 With P-90 (the Mohog guitar!)

Why not just search for a JS700. ok it has a mahogany neck too which will give it a different sound to a JS6 with P90's but it saves you the hassle of getting a JS6 or 6000 altered.

As for Satch using it to record the whole album well no you can hear him use a whammy bar on Down Down Down

As for P90's well to be honest I never liked them at the time. I think my tastes have changed slightly but I couldn't live with the noise of them in my JS700. I had planned on swapping them out for the Tone Zone P90's then I got an offer and stupidly sold it.

The JS700 was onle of the coolest JS's there is and I loved it from the moment I first saw Satch in a Mag with one. Shame though that the production ones had the 21's fret "Joe Satriani" inlay otherwise it would have been perfect.

pablo, yes, the js700 would be a great alternative too. if there's one around the corner, i'll sure get it! prices for the js700 are around 300$ to 400$ roughly, which is quite cheap compared to js6/6000.

I've learnt the js1600 is mahogany as well, but i can't spend too much cash for a brand new one.

the stock pickups on the js700 are certainly very cheap (ibanez), so that'd be an obvious upgrade. But anyone has an idea on what were the original pickups on the Mohog guitar ? I doubt they were IBZ P90

if you think the js1600 will be too expensive, then you should probably cross the js6/js6000 off your list, since they typically go for about $1100 - $1300 on e-bay due to their rare nature, which is probably comparable to what the js1600 will sell for. i agree that the js700 is your best bet. it is also a rare guitar, but they do sell for cheaper than the js6/js6000. just make sure you get a japanese made one instead of the korean made. i had a korean js700 and it was not possible to intonate it correctly due to where they drilled for the wraparound bridge.

thanks for the tip ! that's good to know. A guy is selling a JS700 MIK for 700 euros (about 1k $), which i found absolutely abusive.

regarding the price : i'd pay 1.3k $ for a JS6 / JS6000 but not 1.3k $ for a JS1600 the colour, the "rarity", right from the time when Joe was incredible. they got to be special !

i must ask the question again : anyone knows what pickups are fitted in the Mohog ?

Re: Js6 With P-90 (the Mohog guitar!)

Well I need a new roof on my house. So it just might HAVE to be on sale.

I'd rather sell a kidney, though. Stupid non-trafficking-in-human-organs laws...

Didnt they make a Korean version too that is still a bit less? I passed on one for $600 a year or 2 ago.

that's the js700 with the p90s. it had a japanese and korean version. i owned both versions at one time and the korean version was impossible to intonate correctly due to where the posts were drilled for the wraparound bridge.
