Let's talk about strings ;-)

Howdy,

So what is the factory string gauge installed on the JS? To me it appears to be .009 to .042, am I right? What brand and gauge you guys use? I've been using Dean Markley's .009-.042 (yeah that yellow package) for years and although I rarely break a string and been happy with DMs so far, I feel like going to either a custom light or even .010-.046 for richer bass, better tone and sustain. Would that still be suitable for bends, fast picking, etc.. i.e. no drastic change technically?

I've used 10s for years. I find bending is a little harder, but speed picking easier.

10s - 46s, dean markley sig steels, the silver pack.

used 9s as a yoof, but for some reason went to 10s, and find them just peachy.

don't really play fast tho.....

I use 11s

For some reason I play legatos and speed picking smoother o thicker strings. Bends are a little hard but I got used to them. IMO they sound alot fuller and thicker as well, and darker but it may be my imagination.

10s are about as low as I an go now. I used to play a set of 8s or 9s, but after trying some 10s I could do alot more fluid runs and louder legatos. I might try some 12s next

I use pure nickel strings exclusively I don't believe in the plated crap I hate there guitars but I found PRS' 10s are pretty nice. But my favourite are DR Pure Blues, I am drifting towards Thomastic now though.

I use D'Addario .008-.032 Bending is very easy, and I surprisingly get good tone and sustain from such thin strings.

Played with D'adadio 0.11 for years, made my fingers stronger, now are back to DR 0.09. Love the extra grip and control.

There are many threads like that but I'll chime in here as well.
10-46 Elixir Nanoweb for me and 11-49 Elixir on my Eb guitar.
All guitars are 25.5" scale lenght.

.009 or .010 for jem needs, (daddario's) standard tuning

.011 for UV needs, (ernie ball power slinky) drop D

.013 on my accoustic, (nanowebs) Eb

I find this to work for me because when I play my accoustic it strenghthens my fingertips, and then my electrics feel like butter.

I use Ernie Ball super slinky -- 0.009 - 0.042. Have used them for years but can't say I put much thought or effort or scientific experimentation into the decision other than that 0.009's were easier to play than 0.010's. Didn't choose Ernie Ball over others for any reason at all, totally arbitrary.

Would be interesting to hear the thought process of anyone whose chosen a particular brand of 0.009's due to some actual, more or less "scientific" experimentation.

I notice I break the 0.24W string most often, and that's on all my electric guitars, (of which I have 13, so it's not just that bridge saddle on one guitar or something.) After that, it's probably the 0.009 string I break 2nd most often.

I use 9's on 25.5" scale guitars (Ibanez, Strat) and 10's on Gibson scale guitars. Right now I only have a Les Paul, so its 10's for me.

Hello DR Tite Fits 10-46. (10-56 for the UV)

Goodbye, everything else.

Once you get used to the feel and superior tone of 10s, you'll be tempted to try 11s! But 10s are the best overall IMO. 9s or less are toys to me.
