long time without my JEM... what should I do?

Hi there,

I'm going far away without my dear JEM7VWH (a 2000) for one year (yeah I don't know if I'll survive that...). I'd like to know what should I do in order not her to be in a bad condition when I come back.

Should I loosen the strings? or remove them?
Should I put the guitar in the case? in a solid one or in a flexible one?

any advice will be appreciated :-)

thanks!

find someone who you trust with your life and pay him to watch it for you. like a house-sitter.

Leave the strings at pitch and put it in a hardshell case. It will be fine.

dig a hole wrap the case in plastic then bury the bitch and she will be fine when you get back.......................or just stick it in a closet in the case.

Leaving the strings at your standard tuning, putting it in its hard case will work out fine.

Only thing additional you need to consider is that temperature and moisture changes can have an negative effect. So, do not to leave it directly near a heater, air conditioning vent or window that will be getting opened when your not around.

Oh, and damp basements or garages are out too!

Leave it strung up, inside its case in "playing position". Put it inside your closet (usually, temperature and humidity is ok in there).

Hi everybody,
Cary_Guitar, please, can you describe me what is "playing position"?
I have to store my guitars in its hardcases and I would like to know what would be the best position to store the cases. ¿ Horizontal (laying down over a table), Vertical (like books)?
What is the reason for that specific position?
Thanks in advance

Thread is from 2008, but maybe he will answer you. I would guess playing position is horizontal on its side, as if it was sitting on your lap and you were playing it.

Re: long time without my JEM... what should I do?

I dunno I think just putting it in the closet standing up would be fine. Just not laying on its back for so long. You want to decrease or try to minimize any rusting. You also want low humidity/ temperature change.

I've kept my old Kramer Pacer in the closet now for over a decade and it is fine. I keep it standing straight up. I pulled it out about a year ago and the neck was still as straight as an arrow.

I wouldn't leave it at someones house who doesn't know about guitars. I mean if something where to happen to it they wouldn't know what to do.

What I'd do finally is figure out a way to bring it with you wherever you go!
