The guitar is a custom Universe. It is supposed to lool like Jimi Hendrix's Monterey Strat. You can see it in the "Machines" section of vai.com.

Here's the link:

the guitar is a UV77MC... a bit burnt.

effects? nothing special... just distortion, a bit of reverb, and some delay.... and IIRC, he may have used a Urei compressor to smooth out the tone a bit, but i could have it confused with another PAW song...

Here's what the October 2000 issue of Guitar One said about the tune when they posted a tab of it- horrible mag, IMO, but someone bought me a subscription once and a few of the articles made it readable...

It doesn't say if the compression was at the board or in chain- as there's obviously some delay on the track that isn't mentioned here, i'm guessing they're talking about what he had hooked up between the guitar and the amp.

Of course, they don't cite their references, so i have no idea how good their information is.

Ok thanks, but he does it live with "Evo" doesnt he??

And a bit off topic, does anyone know what the song means, exactly?

Steve says in the PAW tab notes it was inspired by the divine being, or some such excellent divine inspiration, and he could, ultimately, take no credit for it. It reflects love and gentle beauty and an almost orgasmic state of divine contentment in my opinion.

The harsh reality is that ANY guitar put in Steve's hands will sound different than if you or I play it. Vai is truly "not of this earth" and we can only hope he continues to bless us with new material for years to come.

Have you seen the video? based largely on the post-apocolyptic/war imagery that he starts breaking out towards the climax, i'm going to have to argue with "love and gentle beauty." Maybe the NEED therein, but...

I have re-photographed this guitar in minute detail, and I'll be putting the new images on Vai.com shortly.

(Posted this on the Ultra Zone Guitar thread too - sorry about that) but we've actually re-photographed Steve's entire collection. It was a huge undertaking - but all those shots will appear on vai.com soon. I will probably upload them one by one.

We'll add another "All About EVO"-style macro look at another of Steve's guitars soon too.. although not sure which guitar that will be just yet..

Decisions, decisions...
