The middle pickup A/B test #1 - i figured it out :)

Okay...I got the little demos into mp3 format (more patience today)

First of all, please pardon all the 'Funk 101" rhythm. *I just wanted to put a bunch of different examples. *Each sample is just under 30 seconds long.

I plugged the guitar straight into board and put a touch of reverb on. *Also added the slightest bit of high end. *i tried to bring the guitar above the track. *I didn't change any settings (other than a little bit of volume) from sample to sample.

Both samples are the '4' position with the middle p'up and the split neck hum.

One is the PAF+Jem Single Coil
One is the PAF+DiMarzio VirtuAL 2

I won't tell you which is which - you decide which sounds better, or if they both sound the same.

Pickup Config #1
Pickup Config #2

If you like this, I'll do the same when the Tom Anderson 7 string P'up comes in. *Let em know if you want to hear that too. *Any suggestions for recording are welcome.

Ok, I'll play that game! *I definitely feel that sample 1 wins my vote. *To my ears I dont hear much differnce in terms of the pickups tonality, but I think the articulation is superior, more defined and generally more pleasing.
I wouldnt like to say which was which, I would guess that #2 is the Jem, but I would hope that I am wrong

Number one seems to have a bit more output provided you used the exact same amp settings and levels on recording. 2 has a more compressed sound and a lower output.

FUn exercise...I agree with Bamm's assessment. *#1 sounds better, but is it just louder? *Seems to have a more crisp tone.

1 had something there that 2 lacked, my vote is for one.

I think #1 is the better of the two-more bite!

I regret having plugged the guitar directly into the board, rather than just using one setting on the preamp. *The difference in the demos was not that big, but the difference in real life, I assure you is much bigger.

Everyone picked the Jem single coil (#1) as the one that sounded better. *They were recorded a few days apart and maybe the volume settings were different.

Or maybe you all just like the JEM single better...personal taste, i guess!

According to the specs on the DiMarzio site, the Virtual 2 is 50% hotter than the HS-3 (JEm single coil's equivalent). *I also get a nice 'acoustic' sound from the bridge-middle position. *never got that from any other pickup, including the TX special.

Thanks to all who participated. *I'm sorry i didn't get to do it from my 7 string!

Oh....I thought that the Jem Single was close to the FS-2.....as I have seen many wiring diagram in old Ibanez site that use FS-2 instead of Jem Single

anyone has detail specification about the Jem Single?
I was planning to replace the JEM SINGLE on my PGM(basswood body) with a HS-2 which is using in my RG(ash body) because I feel that the HS-2 sounds better.....
But I dunno is that it "sound better" because of different woods....

Kev says HS-3

It similar, not the same. *Each JEM middle matches the hums that surround it, i.e. The one in the DBK matches the Breeds, the 7VWH matechs the Evo, etc.

All I know is that just about anything is better than what's in there.

the 7vWH has an evo single - or that's what the specs say, and mine sounds brilliant.
