Re: My JS700 with JS6 envy

(Ancient Thread resurrection alert)

The pics in the first post still work.

What is the reasoning for the staggered ferrule holes? Does that change string tension without changing scale length?

I ask because my JS700 doesn't feel as solid as my JS6000 and I was wondering if the bridge swap and ferrule holes might make it feel better overall.

Re: My JS700 with JS6 envy

I think it's got something to do with getting a good angle as the string comes over the bridge from the body, the same way you want a string tree or tilt at the head stock to produce a sharp angle after the nut. It gives a firm point for intonation and sustain in my opinion but some others might know more. The staggered set up is similar to the intonation arrangement typical for a guitar's bridge and not so sharp an angle that stress might cause it to break prematurely....

smooth55 is right. At the time I did that mod, Ibanez had just released the SZ line which had the staggered holes. Their promo material claimed it led to more even string tension and (I think) better intonation. Who knows if that's valid or just hype? Could be that it's purely cosmetic and they just wanted to put an Ibanez spin on the usual string-through design. Anyway, I considered the options: the asymmetrical Ibanez layout, the straight across Carvin (and others) layout, or the straight diagonal of Schecter and others. Eventually I went with Ibanez because it was, afterall, an Ibanez and the bridge was the same as the one used on most SZs.

BTW -- that guitar still gets a lot of play time. It's my all time favorite fixed bridge guitar.

Cheers,
Bert

Edit: Here's an image of the guitar, in case anyone wants to see what we're discussing:
