Cool My new plan!

Here is a plan I have. You guys let me know what you think. I have the opportunity to buy a JS10th Chromeboy for around 2G. Unfortunatly it has alot of chrome missing. The rest of the guitar is in pretty good shape. The good news is that for around $500 or $600 I could get it rechromed. Would you guys do it??

Re: My new plan!

I would never pay 2500 dollars for a guitar,never.
It's just a piece of wood nothing more.
And if I had to pay at least I'd prefer an original one ready to fly.
But if you want it go for it.

Re: My new plan!

hmmm, a tough call. Are you going to be playing it out or is this for a collector's item? If it's to be a collector's item, don't rechrome it. If you're going to play it, I'd probably still leave it the way it is, more "character" that way, but I'd be sorely tempted to rechrome it in such a way that it won't flake or scratch/tarnish.

Re: My new plan!

Yea, see thats my problem. I would love to keep it and play it, but then i would love to re-chrome it and sell it for twice what I paid. Its a real hard decision. Its a fantastic guitar to play, but maybe better to sell. Still deciding.

Re: My new plan!

I say go for it if your going to keep it as a player...but thats a nasty bit missing chrome, at least your right arm will cover the majority of it when playing....unless you do the two handed tapping thing and expose the grim truth!!!!

Is the re-chroming getting done by the original people that did the chrome in the first place????

Red face Re: My new plan!

No, it would be done by the people that did the Js 100 Chrome I got from Scarello. Here is the link to that below.

Re: My new plan!

Oh yeah, I forgot that the JS10ths were Luthite...in that case, I'd still leave it if I was contemplating sellling it as a collectors item, but if I wasn't planning to sell it, or was thinking of playing it, I'd do the rechrome. It just doesn't look good with it not being wood under there.

Re: My new plan!

You won't be able to sell it for much as a rechrome because the people that would pay $5000 for a tenth can buy a tenth in great shape for that much and wouldn't drop that much on a rechrome. I have a tenth in great shape that's in the case and I bought another in not so good shape and I had just part of it redone. It looks good other than one line in the chrome where you can see it was redone but that's the point. I play the hell out of it becuase it's already flawed and I don't have to worry about it. I say if you're content with that then it's worth the rechrome, but if you want to resell you will be losing money.

Talking Re: My new plan!

Right now I am thinking that I would keep it and use it. At least for now. I have an Ibanez Jem, but both my JS series started life as JS 100's. they are kewl as shiOt and have great graphics and all the high end pups and trems, but its not REALLY the same thing is it?

Re: My new plan!

Find a used JS1 JS900 or JS1200 and get it chromed you'll save a stack of cash.

Doesn't make any sense to me to buy a beat up 10th and do it up. Then again I wasn't a fan of the whole luthite idea in the first place...not that big on the whole chrome look either to be honest. I'd be quite happy if Joe had the only chromes out there.

Only reason they used luthite was coz the old way of doing the chroming was easier no ?

Re: My new plan!

The chroming process involves water, and water and the body wood don't go very well together.

Re: My new plan!

Swirls involve water and they are fine.

The problem was the chrome sticking to the guitars. I read somewhere that the wood guitars needed a layer of graphite on them before they could be chromed as the process involves passing an electric current through it. It is after it's chromed with the chrome 'bubbling' off the wood.

I may be wrong though.
