Need tips on custom guitar (JEM inlays)

I'm making a handmande guitar and I'm modelling it from the JEM V WH..
I wonder, what are the inlays made of? Abalone and? is that mother of pearl? or is it plastic?

How would the inlays look in abalone and mother of pearl or maybe all in abalone?

VWH is MOP with abalone accents such as leaves. Correct me if I'm wrong people... The Jem 10 has an abalone vine - that I'm 100% sure of. I HIGHLY recommend Abalone. It will cost more and is more dangerous and harder to work with but the beauty will be worth it. Wear a mask and be careful with real abalone.

I'll try to find the picture of my Jem10 custom neck all in abalone. Beauty!

Yup, go with 100% abalone.

VWH's large leaves are definately not real MOP shell... they look like plastic/synthetic. Real MOP would look alot nicer, but still a bit plain and dull. The small ones are as gabe said are abalone ...glen

Why not use abalone on the big leaves, which mark the usual "marker" positions at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, etc. and use mother of pearl for the smaller ones? That way, you've got a bit of visual contrast, which would also help if you rely on the fretboard markings at all for visual orientation.

Jeremy at LGM Guitars also does a killer mirrored vine inlay.

Hey! Why not blow the whole wad on an experimental project!?

I was thinking, use a frosted-like "transparent" inlay with an LED circuit in the fingerboard. I was wondering if "frosted" plastic would refract and disperse the light from one LED (per fret marker, of course) to make it look like the entire leaf is lighting up uniformly.

No thanks... it seems kinda pointless and a waste of money... I'm not playing in the dark so often...

I'll think i'll go with big leafs in abalone and small in mother of pearl

Actually LED's will show through white MOP just fine Best of both worlds I think if the LED is far enough away from the inlay it should light up fairly uniformly.

Hey, I know it's costly and probably not worth it to many, but I dig that showy stuff!
