New JS - Joe with a 7 string..?

Here's a copy of the mailing list e-mail I just got:

I wanted to let you all know what I've been up to these days. Everyday
finds me in my studio writing songs and making demos for the next CD
project. This one is going to rock! I can't wait to hear the band
playing these songs. There are 20 as of now, but, I will have to edit it
down to a more manageable number before our January 7 start date.

With me in the studio will be: Jeff Campitelli on drums, Matt Bissonette
on bass, Eric Caudieux on guitar and keys, John Cuniberti engineering,
and a few guests... Robert Fripp (King Crimson) has contributed some
great performances already!

I've put together a very cool collection of amps, guitars, pedals, mic
pre's and compressors for us to play with. Currently my favorites are
the Wells amp, Cornford amps, Belov amps, Vox AC30, and of course the
Marshalls. I've got a few old Fenders as well. Besides my chrome JS
guitars I'll be using two new Ibanez prototypes: a JS 7-string and a
Mahogany body maple top JS guitar with a shorter scale length. Yes, I'm
using a 7-string on a few songs!

We hope to have Jon Luini roaming around with his video camera on most
days as well. It should make a cool DVD someday, don't you think?

I will be posting weekly updates from the studio to keep all of you up
to date on what's going on.

Thanks to all of you for making the site an interesting place to visit...

Happy Holidays!
Joe

Let's not jump to conclusions and assume this is going to be a production model. Just something Joe is experimenting with.

It just seems so strange to me to picture Joe with a 7 string.

Cool stuff.
I'm more interested in the shorter scaled mahog with maple top to be honest.

Lookin' forward to hearing what he can get out of that Cornford too.

All interesting stuff.

Jay, just sign up at www.satriani.com

Joe mentioned "a Mahogany body maple top JS guitar with a shorter scale length" which can be interesting.

What would a shorter length scale do? *I imagine you can tune the strings higher (as opposite to tuning the strings lower with a longer length scale). *New sound?

Interesting indeed...

A shorter scale will give the strings less tension, given the same gauge & pitch. *Looks like they're aiming at a JS/Les Paul mix - the paul standard is mahogany/maple with a 24.75" scale.

A pal of mine had one like this (it had an edge trem). *It was a one off he got when he worked at Hoshino. *Sounded great, but it was way heavier than basswood.

Personally, I'd like an alder one...

Putting a top on a radiused body should be interesting...

The whole 7 string thing seems to be wearing off a bit, at least in pop culture. It will be interesting to see if they release that as a production model.
