New JEM Project

So, I just ordered the body pictured below and should get her in a few days. I already have an AANJ Japan Ibanez neck to put on her. I've pretty much decided to go with DiMarzio Breed pickups but am unsure what single coil pikcup I'm going to go with.

I'm looking for opinions to these questions; (I was thinking gold hardware, gold pickup rings. red or yellow pickups and maybe no pickguard.)

  1. What color hardware (gold, black, chrome)?
  2. Pickguard, yes or no?
  3. Pickup rings Yes or no? (if yes, what color?)
  4. What color pickups?
  5. What single coil pickup to go with the Breeds?
I think that's about it.

Re: New JEM Project

After looking at the DiMarzio site for color availability (I know, I should have done that before answering), for the pickups I would go black & yellow/red/black & yellow.

Re: New JEM Project

I almost agree with therightjem, but here's my 2 cents...

1) Black hardware. It will make the swirl stand out more.
2) Absolutely not.
3) If you decide to do pickup rings, do black. If at all possible, I would suggest you not use them.
4) Red and black would be good options, possibly yellow.
5) Dimarzio FS-1. Awesome high powered single that has a very small amount of hum that works beautifully with high powered humbuckers, especially in split.

Make that swirl stand out. It is really gorgeous. Don't detract too much from it with gaudy hardware or crazy colored pickups. Let the eyes grab the lines and colors of that swirl, not the accessories.

Re: New JEM Project

I was thinking if I went with a pickguard, it would be clear, but I probably won't go with one. I just hope the body doesn't get too pick scratched....

I assumed a clear pickguard was a given. Pickguards can be easily replaced, that paint job, not so much.

+2, even though I ignored much of this advice with my swirl.

Re: New JEM Project

OK, well I have an original black Edge trem and black Japanese tuning machines coming. I've decided against the pickguard and pickup rings. Still have to order the pickups though.

Yep, sorry. I just cant wait for everything to come in.

I'm going to have to clearcoat the body. I'm thinking of going with Polyurethane for the clearcoat. Much harder and more durable than lacquer. Since the guitar will be pickguardless I'm going to need a nice hard finish.

Re: New JEM Project

I ordered the "F" spaced Breed set in red, a DiMarzio True Velvet single coil in black and 2 black Q-parts knobs with purple abalone tops.

That's what I was thinking also. I'll probably get a clear piece of plexiglass and make my own pickguard and see what it's going to look like on there before I screw it down.
