New jem project guitar!

Hey guys, im making a jem project guitar! I got the body off the bay in swirl purple and silver. I know this is a strange color for a jem, but the way i envision, it will be amazing with a clear pickguard, a full blue evo set and a vine head stock. Heres a picture!

Heres some info that came with it:

Body Type................Ibanez Jem
Body Wood................ 2 piece basswood
Pickup Configuration.....Hum-Single-Hum
Swirl Type..............."Purple Rain" Multicolor
Bridge Compatability.....Fits Ibanez Edge, Lo Pro edge, and Edge Pro
Neck compatibility.......Fits standard Ibanez 24 fret RG wizard I/II necks

Obviously its a custom made one so please dont flame me on it being "fake". With the body, the seller suggested i clear coat it, since it is only painted. So, can someone direct me to how to clear coat the body? Also, any comments or suggestions? Thanks

NOTE: i am looking for a neck, but its not urgent and i plan to search for one in the future. If you have one that will fit give me a pm with pictures

Re: New jem project guitar!

another question: do i have to use a pickguard? this will be my first jem so i dont know how the pick ups are going to be help up. the body doesnt seem to have the holes for the pickguard so im guessing it doesnt necessarily have to have a pickguard right?

Re: New jem project guitar!

So you were the guy that snagged that one off "the bay"??? Dude, Nate Perle is a good guy and if you haven't gotten the body yet, he's fast with his shipping. I've built two Jem swirls from ones he's painted.

My only minor gripe is his routes can be off. And not the pick-ups or bridge, those are spot on. It's the damn cavity plates on the back that he needs to check his machine for. The main backplates on mine all fit great, but it's the tone cavity and the jack cavity plates that don't line up exact.

Oh yeah, if you get a clear pickguard from Jeannie. Be prepared to modify it a bit to fit. Either Jeannie's design is off, or Nate's is off. But I've put two different clear pickguards on my guitars from Jeannie(both made for Jems) and both need some modifications to the volume and tone holes. Both also needed some mods to the selector switch as well but mainly just to make it wider(this can be achieved very easy).

P.S.
Fluid, if you want some help or ideas on building a guitar around one of Perle's guitars. Just shoot me a PM and I can help you man. Like I said, I've put two guitars together around bodies he's swirled.

Check it:

Re: New jem project guitar!

yup that was me! you have a new pm ;D

So guys, any tips or hints for me? I am a first time jem user and a first time project guitar builder. This seems like a fun experiment and its going to be something i can be proud of By the way, where can you purchase supplies (pots, bridges, nuts, tuners, necks, pickguards) for project guitar building cheaply and QUICKLY. i live in the NYC area, so something in the US in definitely a must. Any suggestions for the exact supplies? What do you use?

Re: New jem project guitar!

Lets see on those parts.....

Pots, knobs, etc- http://www.stewmac.com/ (GREAT site)

Bridge, anything Ibanez - www.ibanezrules.com. Owned by Rich on here, great guy, got a lot of parts from him for my project. Authorized Ibanez dealer, will hook you up with just about anything Ibanez.

Necks- depends on what you want. You can always get a luthier to make you one (check out some of the banners at the top of the page), but that usually takes a while unless you get one from http://christopherwoods.com/ or another luthier that has already made ones in stock. Your best bet may be to just stalk the 'bay until one you like pops up. For the neck, your probably not gonna get a nice one fast and cheap. Gonna have to be one or the other. Nick Perle may also have necks for sale, im not sure if he has any already made though.

For a pickguard, go to the 'bay. Theres always some on there (watch out for jeannies though, not a good track record).

Swirled777, those are awesome guitars, nice work. Ditch those decals though, get some real pyramids!
