New member and new guitar!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site, though not to Jem's.

I've been playing for around 16 years now, though work and family has long since seen my hobby becoming "home use only".

With my very first credit card when I got my first job, I purchased my first Jem, an '89 777VBK. Unfortunately, too much on the guitar left a whopping 50 on an amp, so the poor old girl had to suffer the indignity of playing through a Chinese built Hohner Panther practice amp. She still managed to sound good though!

But times move on, funds grow and fashions change and, whilst I never really admired the colouring of the VBK (I always regretted choosing the cheaper option instead of a 77BFP or UV7MC, both of which I could have had), I loved the way it played and sounded. Last year finally saw a Marshall AVT150 arrive and a renewed interest in my playing after years of neglect and rusty fingers.

This year finally sees the old girl leaving, with a small pang of regret, but having paid only 600 for her 10 years ago (used obviously), I've been offered 650 for the Jem and my old Washburn KC40V as a trade in against a new guitar.

Took some deciding to finally order something new though. Initially, like almost everyone else I imagine, it was the 7VWH that sprang to mind. However, a friends comment that it "wasn't me" added to his "John Lennon's Imagine video" comment sowed a seed of doubt. The VSBL just doesn't do anything for me and the DBK finish is just too odd for my tastes. Then EBMM's Luke caught my eye, having been a long standing Lukather fan. However, much decsion making and staring at colour sheets were spoiled when I discovered how tiny the neck is and how my sizeable fingers got tied in knots.

On reopening the Ibanez catalogue, I finally opened my eyes to the UV777PBK. Actually, it more or less jumped out and smacked me about the head...What an utterly astonishingly gorgeous guitar! I'd never really thought about a 7 string before but suddenly realised how many times I'd wanted that extra string when working through the PAW or SAR tabs.

So, yesterday, the deposit was paid (750, ie $1000). It should arrive in the next few days (Ibanez UK had literally recieved just one UV on their shipment that day when my dealer phoned, I call it fate!) and I am like a kid at Christmas again! Just can't contain the excitement!!!

Just thought I'd share that with you all as an introduction and say hi!

No. In some ways I'd like to keep the VBK out of posterity, but it, and my old Washburn KC40V are being traded in to allow me to afford the Universe. That, and various sold items! I'm now without my old Laserdisc player, Gamecube and a few assorted bits of Star Wars tat (it's amazing what people still pay for the toys!!!)

And I wish the 750 was all it cost. Still another 850 to go, but the guitars and some savings will cover that.

I'd love to get another Jem at some point. A Jem10 would be lovely, but having just seen one advertised in our local Ad-Mart paper for 3500, I don't think that'll happen. I still want a mint 77BFP as well, but I look forward more to a Jem using similar colouring to the UV777PBK so I can have a matching pair!!!

Congrats on the new Jem! Post a pic when you get a chance.

Maybe I'm a geek or something , but I still have a bunch of original Star Wars "collectables" (don't like to use the word "toys" as they don't get played with- anymore) in storage and some of the stuff is very valuable. I think the value of the stuff being my playthings from my childhood is far more than the $ to me at least. I too have entertained the idea of selling parts of it to finance a Jem, I just haven't followed the urge.
Anyway, welcome to the site!

It was actually far less painful than I thought it would be!

I'd kept hold of them for years and didn't think I'd want to part with them but lack of space and lust for the new guitar meant it was practical to do it.

And i don't miss it at all. Feels strangely refreshing. I still have my core of Star Wars books, including all the rare ILM and Anniversary books, and Steven Sandsweets action figure guide more than compensates for selling them.

Congrats on your UV!

Lucky indeed that you got one right away. I've heard stories from others that have had to wait many months until Headstock could cough up their guitars.
