Next potential desirable Jems?

Are there Any Jems out there that have potential to be desirable in the future, lacking a crystal ball of course.

Like maybe the FP2? or maybe the 2010 7v that has the prestige neck, and the come back of the original Edge trem?.
Or maybe the pre 03's with the Ebony fret board. Or not of what im saying means crap? ..lol

I'm new to the Jem world so i'm just throwing stuff out there.

Thoughts, opinions, facts, on this subject?

Unless tastes change what is seen as desirable now will continue to be. If tastes change then anything is on the table. If people start to like the Earth graphic on the FX see that price go high because of such limited supply, etc.

I think Rich has hit the nail on the head, it'll be the ones that folks can't get, be it swirls, or anniversaries, or anniversary swirls, like the DNA from the year 2000!

The upcoming "desirable" JEMs will be the next limited edition nostalgia MIJ models released. Ibanez has made the good business decision to take large profits (on high priced & limited releases) and keep them flowing. The 7VWH glut in the used market deflates the prices of player JEMs... making this decision all the more obvious.

I'm neither a fan nor the audience - & they're still in production - but objectively speaking a clean, non-defective 70SFG has the potential to be a player classic (especially outside the USA) as it's priced well and has the Edge trem & vine. Nothing from Indo is likely to have that combo anytime soon (I.e. if MIJ production unexpectedly & abruptly ends). Plus in several years people won't really care about MIJ vs MII especially given that base MIJ is neither priced great nor does it stand out in the market like it used to.

It occurs to me that there are several ways to answer this question. I absolutely agree with ATD swirls as there is a finite number of those but perhaps the poster is thinking more about more affordable guitars today from the Jem line that could continue to go up in value? Me, I’d consider an RB or original PBK (if you can find one), both had fallen out of favor but I think they may be back just due to how few I suspect there are. Then there are versions of models that are starting to be more sought after like an original run FP or an ebony board VWH. I realize the VSBL kind of fell out of favor but when was the last time you saw one? That is a dark horse choice I realize but some models had some limited production runs and don’t show up in the wild as often anymore which should help raise their value. A bit more pedestrian but a “common” model to look for is either the original VBK (black and green) or the redone VBK (black w/ tree of life) as both have a following. Going back a bit I think you’ll be pleased if you secured a nice condition SK along the way too and there is still a chance to get into one of those but the search will be long and the negotiations arduous! Especially if you want mine! Ha ha. (It is not for sale) Oh.. and maybe a BFP that hasn’t turned too green. If we’re talking about some dark horses, I’d consider those as some of them. Keep in mind that condition matters in the Ibanez world, this isn’t a Fender forum where the beat to hell guitars go for more. 😄

Re: Next potential desirable after Jems?

I promised myself I'm not going to buy guitars for a good while.
But if a Premium version of the JEM 777VBK came out....
Actually, I'm not a huge fan of Jems and I was okay, playability and spec wise, of the777VBK I owned way back BUT IMO it is one of the most gorgeous Jems or RGs Ibanez has made.
In general though it's really about what Steve wants to put out there and what Ibanez wants to sell, no? His sonic blue Jem is gorgeous too but it never made it to production - just a custom. Same with RDNZL or all his other customs.
I prefer the looks of an RG, which has also had the most artistic range visually.

Exactly what I'm talking about. The less obvious jems that had small changes throughout their production, but had big followings due to maybe playability, different components etc etc.
Even though the 7v has a long production run, they changed things here and there, not much, but alot of times this has an effect on value down the road, kinda like old cars with different options from the factory that had short availability. For example, Porsche is moving away from manual cars and going to dual clutch transmissions , so now the old manuals are skyrocketing in price

Is the Jam FP2 production ending in 2018?

You will know before wNAMM 2019 or when they're cleared out.

Ibanez world is weaned on placing value in technology, not the "old cars" mentality. This won't ever change because when you analyze the matter you see it's emotional and window dressing (non-signature ibanez guitars don't hold value). The Ebony for example on the VWH is so mundane that no one really noticed if it was dyed rosewood or dyed ebony. Vai likes rosewood so the "Ibanez world" likes rosewood. The "Ibanez world" now dislike PAFpro because Vai & Satch moved on. The scarf joints on old JEM/UVs are unstable over time, and the wood shrink, etc. Even the swirls are fading and looking worse and worse (and reference catalog doctored). The clears yellow - the VWH less so - but degrade the visual. Ibanez world whines about "sinklines" in alder wood whereas a Tom Anderson or Suhr buyer embraces the thin clear. Sure, this makes for interesting discussion but for example hording LoPro ebony VWHs is probably not a good idea to resell later. Same with VSBL or any other JEM... they're all very obvious .

The more interesting convo to me would be if Vai actually made a change in the JEM (like JS did) would the older ones LOSE value? I would say yes they would because the Ibanez world follows the artist so closely. JS MIJ 22-fret models are all littering the used market. But we know this is very unlikely to happen.

Happy shopping!

From my viewpoint, and I buy, own and sell lots of these, the only possible answer from within the same model line is the ebony necked VWH and first runs of certain models like the FP and DY that are becoming just a little more desirable. Apart from that, knobs moved or trem changes or any other changes within a single model line that could enhance value, doesn’t currently exist in Jems.
