Origins of the Vine Inlay - were did the vine come from

Here is a subject that I don't hear discussed much in here. Were did the Vine inlay come from I know it was around before the Jem guitars on older Ibanez guitars but who disigned it were did it come from. Also does anybody know the story of how it made it's way to the Jem line of guitars or was it just a cool thing from the past of Ibanez that Steve Vai agreed would look cool on the Jem. Well any info that people have on this subject would be cool.
Thanks

Origins of the Vine Inlay

Good question. I do rememeber them from some of the 70s (Artstar?) Ibzs,, but I have no idea about the actual origin.

Rich?

I actually have an Ibanez Performer 300 (which is the Les Paul lawsuit guitar) and this doesn't have the vine on them.

It could have a history or it could just be an idea out of the top of Vai's head...like the way the floyd works on this guitar.

Vine inlay's have been around for hundreds of years, the familiar Jem vine I was just very surprised about. *I was looking on ebay as I usually do, and found a Bob Weir model Ibanez from 1980. *The vine on this model was nearly identical. *The ad said there were 3 to 6 of that model made, with that inlay. *I looked very closely, and the leaves and stem matched the Jem very closely, the shapes and placement. *I had always thought that it was a Steve Vai original design, but it's apparently not. *I can't find the ebay add right now or I'd post a picture, but if I do come across it, I'll put it up.

Going beyond Ibanez (don't flame me!!) and back in time a little. I am pretty sure that Epiphone produced some acoustic Jazz guitars way back which had a vine inlay running up the neck.

Matt.

Probably about 90 years ago, Gibson was doing vines on mandolins and the like, they are far from new, but the Jem vine which I think probably originated on that Bob Weir model, is a little less showy than the older style vines (ignoring the fact that they were neon once )

Origins of the Vine Inlay

The vine as we know today first appeared on a guitar custom made for John McLaughlin... * It was a twin neck ash bodied abalone bound monster.. *Jeff hasselberger of ibanez at the time asked if he could copy it for Bob Weir and he did the rest is history.. *The dates we are talking about are around 1974-75...

Below is a pic of an Ibanez 2671 twin neck artwood twin.. *this is the rare of rare of the ibanez guitars as only a handful were made * ( between 12 and 30 still trying to get an exact number.. *9 are known of and the rest we are trying to find)

and this is a pic of a 1975 Professional ... very close if not exact to the jem inlay
