Possibly stupid Universe Question:

Pardon my ignorance with the Universe models---thinking of making the jump!
Is it possible to tune the first 6 strings conventionally and tune the high 7th string above the E? I know adding the low B is the norm....will it add undue stress? Anyone try it?
I see added solo opportunities with the extra high string.
Thanks.

It is perfectly possible, people often put on a high A. The trouble is the string is prone to breaking as it is so thin. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that to match a set of 9 guage strings you would need to use an 8 guage for the high A, and that is a very skinny string to take that tension.

Actually it would be a 7 [9, 11, 13] which are prone to breaking quickly and are difficult to find to begin with

Thanks, must be 10s that you match with an 8 then. I knew an 8 came into it somewhere. Does anyone manufacture 7s?

I typoed caught up in the sequencing.

9, 11, 16

10's run 10, 13, 17

They make 7's but try finding somebody that stocks them [reminds myself to order some next string order]

Against that sequence an 8 wouldn't be out of the question then to match with a set of 9s. My back of an envelope sums suggest that a 7.5 would be about right. An even rarer beast than the 7 no doubt!

Do you get many people asking for Universes to be set up with a high A Rich?

Hmmm, not once Rich? I can't believe it hasn't been tried yet. Think of the soloing options!!!!

You could just use 2- 9's for the top! You wouldn't need to go thinner would you? I think it would work, and you could make the jump to 7 easier. I'd think it would also be easier to mute the top than the bottom and you keep all the chord patterns the same. Now I'm excited

Rich didn't say it hadn't been tried, just that he had never been asked to do it. In the book that you used to get with a Universe it suggests a high A as a possible arrangement.

You could use 2 9s, but the string tension would be very different between them.

I would go with 0,8 - 10 - 13 - 17 for the upper strings and tune the guitar to C.

When I started playing I used 0,8 but the first string used to brake a lot (and it was tuned to E). Tunning it to C may be a feasable alternate tunning.

The scale length of the UVs is just too long to make high A feasible. Vai originally attempted to string it with a high A, but decided to go with the low B after it kept breaking. i think the low B is more useful, anyway. Seriously, how often do any of you reach the 24th fret, let alone feel the need to go above it?

When you want you want to play above a really high E

I would think with the additional high string you don't need to go up to the 24th fret at all. Keep your patterns mid-neck and the extra string allows you to stay there without romping up and down.

...which is the exact reason I like having the low string. You can chill out mid-neck and still hit some low-register notes withotu having to rely on open strings.

I sometimes throw in solo stuff up to a high A when using my UV, I initially tried a high A string but it seemed even touching the trem would snap it so I use a pitch-shifter now
