Quality test: Original vs Custom

I have a question for those who own actual Jems as well as some customs that they've had made. I too, am soon going to be receiving my custom guitar all finished and I was pondering a point made by someone else in here about how their custom stacked up against their real Jem.

How does your custom Jem or UV feel, sound and play stacked up against your official Jem/UV's?

I'll be very interested to see your opinions. I own a 7VWh so I'll hopefully be able to chime in on this very thread in a couple of weeks with my opinions. I have every bit of faith that it's going to be beautiful to play but man....... Jem's to me are probably the best feeling guitar I've ever played so even if my custom is half as good it'll be more than enough.

Re: Quality test: Original vs Custom

I don't own a custom but I'll throw an opinion out there. A body is easy enough to fake. A well done custom body should be indistinguishable from the real thing. Obviously hardware is going to be the same on both guitars. The one thing that's always made me skeptical of customs is the neck. That's where most of the feel of the instrument will come from and there doesn't seem to be a simple set of plans floating around the internet about how to make an Ibanez neck. All the custom necks I see always focus on how the inlays look but never mention how they play and feel.

I'm looking forward to your feedback. Not suggesting that you'll do this, but I hope that you leave off the rose-colored glasses for the review. I feel like more often than not, the reviews of customs display a fair amount of choice-supportive bias.

Re: Quality test: Original vs Custom

my cousin has a JS1200 the original. tried to play my js whom I've worked, and says there is no difference in the feel under his arm, the original and my JS ... I also worked several JEM guitar and I am very satisfied and those who have played them! ! Especially with the neck!
Everybody have own choice!

Re: Quality test: Original vs Custom

Well here's my 2 guys.

I've owned about 4 uv777bk's, a gmc swirl uv, all the neon Jems, and a vwh. Probably a couple more I can't remember. Of all of those models, here are my top 2.
Gmc uv, and uv777bk. (97 pbk model)

so here how they Stacked up IMO.

I'll start out by saying that the neck on the gmc in a 7620 neck with custom pyramids, so I won't comment on how a custom neck feels. BUT the body is a custom mahogany body with monkey grip and lions claw routes. It has an Evo in bridge, and blaze in middle and neck positions. And sound wise- this think blows ever other guitar I've owned outta the water. Playability is astounding as well, but again, it's a production neck.

My uv777bk is also amazing. When compared to the gmc the difference in quality I believe is the blaze In the bridge, and the basswood body. It just doesn't take advantage of that 7th string.

Yup...I love my custom
