Question about 7PBK

I figure if anyone will know, it will be someone on this site.

I bought my 7PBK 17 years ago from the original owner. He bought it new from the shop he worked at about 8 months before I bought it from him. The serial number indicates it's a 1989 model.

Please take a look at the position of the volume pot. There is a white, plastic cap in the original pot position. It was like this when I bought it. I haven't seen this on the other 7PBK's that I have seen.

Has anyone else seen the volume pot in this position from the factory? From what I understand, the 7PBK was used as somewhat of a prototype (this might just be an urban myth-can someone clear this up for me as well?). Or, was this probably done by the previous owner?

Thanks

Re: Question about 7PBK

I agree. I would restore it with a replacement guard unless you really like the knob there. The volume knob has moved since the early RG models(but not that much) so I can only assume the JEM followed suit.

Re: Question about 7PBK

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I thought.

I'm not too worried about restoring it as I won't be selling it (I don't care about resale value). I might check out a reproduction pickguard, but it's not high on my priority list. I was more cutious than anything.

Re: Question about 7PBK

I have original guards in the revised location. The original location guards are long unavailable.

What is the price of the revised location guards that you have (or would you prefer a pm for pricing discussion?)?

As well, in your experience, is there a lot of differecne in the pot position of my guard from the originals?

Re: Question about 7PBK

I move all of my volume knobs lower. I always turn myself off live, so I just move them and plug the whole. I hate the position of the volume pots on Ibanez guitars. Well on others also.

Re: Question about 7PBK

Yep, the location of the vol knob is not great, even the relocated one.

But I love the PBK! One of the coolest JEM's, IMO.

I do love the PBK. I have been playing it for so long, it will take quite a while for me to get used to anything other than the wizard neck. If I had the $$'s I would try to get one of the 550 20th anniversary models for the original wizard neck feel.

Even the 540pii neck doesn't feel just 'right' to me yet. The extra 2mm width changes everything more than I thought it would.

Re: Question about 7PBK

How much would a PBK go for in the UK nowdays. It's my favorite JEM, I'd love to get one someday.

The ones that I have seen on the bay in the last couple of years usually go in the $1400-1600 range. These have been out of the U.S.

Re: Question about 7PBK

I love mine. The neck doesn't seem all that different in spec sheets, but compared to my 777SK, it's a whole different world. Which is a good thing because i wanted to have two different jems
