Question A question about the paint on Universe/JEM

Hi,

My UV had a nasty fall () and now there's a big chip out of the upper horn. No damage to the neck or otherwise. (SOOOO GLAD IT WASN'T MY VRMR!!!!!!!!) Can I leave this just a is, or is it better to seal or paint it? The wood is clearly visible. How could I fix the spot? The "ding" is large, although its only the edge of the upper horn and the missing paint is a stripe of about 1"

Please advise. I don't want to have a whole new paint job done on it, if not necessary, but IF I'd do one, I'd have a massive polyurethane clear coating on it, and not the fragile finish that it has now.

Best regards,

JP

Re: A question about the paint on Universe/JEM

poly is whats on there to begin with, poly is only good for minor dings and dents but a big fall no matter how thick the poly is would still crack like that..

plus poly finishes are usually tone robbers..

Its fine the way it is, its got character now, and now that the first scar is there it makes the next ones much easier to accept..

Now get back to playing her.. she needs you LOL shes hurt

Yeah, it's just a mark in the guitar's life. Don't worry about it and DON'T do a refinish. It baffles my mind anyone would want to refinish perfectly good OLD UV's and JEM's. If it's a custom, knock yourself out, but please, I beg you not to refinish it.

I've been playing her all day, and she's OK, stays in tune like always, plays like butter and has tone for weeks. That's the only thing I was really afraid of. But she's OK!

You know, since it is the border, maybe with just some black tape over it, it 'll be OK. Couldn't miss this baby for weeks to have a paint job done anyway. So she gets some tape on her wounds and that's about it

Ah, and by the way, I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD START ABOUT HULKIFICATION!!! NO WAY JOSE!!!!

Regards,

JP

~OUCH~

You really must be more careful with your babies, JP What happened??

How bout some pics so we can survey the damage??

Depending, there could be some easy quick fix. Black guitars are the easiest for that.

Just be thankful the neck / playability wasn't compromised, bro! That would suck!

I was jamming in the livingroom, left the UV on the couch, went for a drink, heard "BLAM", came back meeting a running cat, found my UV on the floor....

Will make a pic later, it's quite damaged

JP

Dang cats...love em and hate em.

Sorry that happened JP. Reminds me of when I left my RG550 on it's stand and came back to find it nicked laying on the floor with my dog next to it!

Re: A question about the paint on Universe/JEM

My first UV took a fall from the guitar stand. Of course, mine was from an absent minded bass player (Im sure no one here knows any of these ) tripping over the cord. That was its first ding........and a nasty one. But....like everyone else has said, it became a character scar. Just like anyone of my own scars....I remember every detail of how it got it..... Ill never forget it. Years from now when youre old, fingers wont move right for chords you cant remember....youll still remember that point in history when the cat tried to be a rock star when no one was looking

Seriously, my buddy found fingernail polish that matches his bass perfectly. You might do the same if it bugs you.

I had thought of that already. It's what I usually did with dings on my axes in the past
