Questions about the UV777BK

I was at my local music shop today to pick up strings and some cables and while checking out the used gear, I noticed a UV777BK for $1,000. It looked to be in great shape, no dings or cracks in the finish. Neck looked good. I actually tried it out, it played well and sounded good. Trem was a Lo Pro 7.

My first question is, posed to 7 string owners, how easy is if for you to shift from a 6 to 7 string guitar? I didn't seem to have too much of a problem while trying it out, but I did at times feel lost, as to which string I was on. It was better when I ignored the low B, but that defeats the purpose of a 7 string, I think.

My next question is about the price of this paticular guitar. It seems kind of low, to me, which makes me wonder if something is wrong with it. Isn't this basically the same guitar as the UV77REMC, minus the paint job?

I was hoping some of you guys could chime in, as I was really thinking of buying this guitar.

As a previous owner i can tell that that is a great guitar, go get it! REMC is a basically a collectors item so there goes the reasonable price

Re: Questions about the UV777BK

I have a Universe UV777BK and LOVE it! It was weird getting used to the extra bottom string for about 5 minutes--then I was in heaven. Once you mentally lock in that there's a low B string--your brain will automatically register it, and you'll be fine. Get it--that's a great deal.

The guy that worked there said it came with a case. I didn't see it (the case) however, but I'm thinking about going back there tomorrow. I'm currently working on the wife. She seems okay with it, but it comes with a compromise, in that we get another Yorkie dog. We have three animals already, I'm not sure we can handle another. If I fold, I get this UV. Come on guys, talk me out of it. Or further talk me into it.

Get the UV, let mama get the Yorkie--and make sure to keep the Yorkie from pissing on it!

Re: Questions about the UV777BK

Well, I went back to the store and "bought" it today. Being it's used and apparently just came in, the store has to hold it until 8/5. So, in three weeks it will be a NGD!

Way I look at it, is if you get the guitar and she gets the dog. It's win-win, however if it doesn't work out(the dog), accidents can always happen.

Re: Questions about the UV777BK

I have another question. What guage of strings do you guys use on 7-string guitars? Also, what guage of strings does the Universe come with from the factory?

I'm thinking of using 9, 11, 16, 24, 32, 42 & 54, basically the same as my JEM. I have no previous experience with a 7-string, so learning will be part of the fun with this one.

Re: Questions about the UV777BK

Not sure what UV's come from the factory with. However, every 7 string I've ever owned, I've always ran either 9-52's or 9-56's on them. Always like light's up front and heavy's down bottom for some crunch. But 56 is as heavy as I'd go. I've played some 7's with heavier gauges and didn't care for it much.
