The "Revoulutionary" new ibanez trem revealed- and it isn't coming

A while back Steve Vai had been dropping hints about a revolutionary ibanez tremolo design. Then there was nothing else ever said about it. It seemed like Steve had spilled te beans early and that it would take years for it to come.

Well, it is not coming, at least from ibanez or any manufacturers. I'll tell you what it was-

It was a tremolo that required no tools to maintain. You wouldn't need any Allen keys, screwdrivers, anything. It would be completley able to be done by hand.

The reason it never came- no company was interested in making it.

At Vai Academy Steve talked about copyrighting stuff, and his ideas, patents etc. he then explained about the trem- presumably the one he said he was working on that would be revolutionary- and said no company would make or design it. He said to feel free to try in our own lol.

It was a mystery for so long and now we know what it finally was. Unfortunately it's not going to happen any time soon. Hopefully he hasn't given up though. Maybe someone will design one

Is that the same thing Nordegg had in his personal experimental JEM in a video recently? Either way, I think I knew kinda. Bummer. At least we still have the Edge!

No the one Thomas has is a linear trem, it goes slides backwards instead of actually pulling up, so intonation stays perfect. You could pull the bar back and pull one chord go up say a half or whole step Into another chord and have it be in tune.

I think a lot folks thought it was tongue in cheek, as right after that period the Floyd patents ran out and Ibanez started putting the Original Edge on a lot of guitars again. Still, cool story bro

1. I see no need for a trem that would need no tools to set intonation, change strings, etc. You'd need a nut that went with it or you'd still have tools. Much less the design challenges, the costs would no doubt be high.

2. Anybody can have a great idea, but turning an idea into a finished product is a very rare occurrence.

3. Now if it made your wang 3" longer, that would be worth the effort!

Yamaha has had that on their RGX 620DZ for a while and we discussed it here when the model came out several years ago. Not sure about intonation but the locking on both sides is done 100% without tools..... so you can tell Steve Yamaha designed it.

That's kind of a cool looking guitar. I'm not so sure I want a bicycle wheel quick release lever on my guitars headstock though

Cool design, but I think you're right; they need to make that lock a little more aesthetically pleasing. It just looks so out of place there.
Perhaps if they made it removable, with a mount on the back of the headstock to store it?
It wouldn't be totally 'tool-less' since that would become a tool instead of part of the guitar, but with it clipped to the back of the headstock it would always be readily available.
Like what they used to do on the Ibanez Prestige with the allen key holders.
Or perhaps figure a design to have the thing on the back of the headstock and have the mechanism go through the back of the headstock itself.
Lots of work, maybe weaken the headstock too, however....hmm..... What did I do with that old AutoCAD disk???

Now, that depends; if it's 'average' already, and you add 3", many women (this one included) won't want that thing anywhere near her!
Bigger isn't always better.....I know guys think it is, but ask any girl that isn't into any pain with her pleasure and she'll agree with me.
But; well, there are exceptions, I guess.....and no, sorry. 6" is not average. 5.25" is average. Look it up!
Why am I talking about this?
On a Sunday morning before Church no less!
Ugh... yup, I'm going to hell.

Yuk! I didn't notice that the first time I saw that pic.

Anyone remember the fliplock nut from Kahler? I wonder if they still hold the patent rights.

Re: The "Revoulutionary" new ibanez trem revealed- and it isn't coming

So wangs aside, there have been several ideas kinda like this. The Floyd rose speedloader was an epic fail for BC rich a few years back. Fender had a tremolo design sorta like this. The Kahler doesn't require a lot of tools and when paired with fenders old lever locking nut it wouldn't require anything. Especially if you had self trimming tuning keys.

Sometimes bigger isn't in fact better, with out getting too technical you can bottom out and for some ladies that hurts, others quite enjoy it.
