Rusted frets on a JEM77FP 1988 ? HELP ME.

hi folks,

I really need expert restore knowledge before buying my very first jem.
It is JEM77FP 1988, not in mint condition but the main problem is that i have never never seen any rusted frets before , some little rusted f***ing points everywhere !!!

what can i do ? would it be possible to stop this ?
does anyone already see that ? how can i heal those frets ?
because i heard that when something is rusted, it's done ! rust will always come back. is it true !

is it a problem of fret quality ? do i have to re-fret the guitar ?

the actual owner never really play his guitar... and tell me she spend most of the time in the flightcase (yes, almost 20 years. like a coffin)

thanks for your help.

how much does he want for it?

EDIT: It doesn't look great, but i think I've seen worse. Needs a LOT of TLC though, If you go for it (if the $$ is right) I strongly (mandatory) suggest you read Rich's "Clean up to set-up/Used guitar primer" tutorial in the tech section of the Ibanezrules website.

I don't know..., Rich just use a 0000 steel wool, would it be enough for me ? cause the UV Rich restored in his tutorial seems to have better frets than this FP.

the seller ask me 1500 euros but the rest of the jem is good for a 23 year old guitar (expect the edge). do you think it's a good deal ?

TLC= tender loving care.....LOL

don't fret much about those frets (lol...pun intended).... more than likely it will come off with VERY little effort. #0000 steel wool will have them lookin' great in no time at all. If you want them to shine like polished mirrors you could use "micro-mesh" sanding pads.....Stewmac sells them in the finishing section

Kurust, a gel like formula will work wonders, just smear on and leave for 15mins wipe off and its back to original metal.

That really doesn't look that bad, but I'd suggest that the price is way too high for the condition the guitar is in. The frets would probably clean right up with steel wool.

Re: Rusted frets on a JEM77FP 1988 ? HELP ME.

hi folks,

do you really think the price is too high ???
there is not so much people who sell used jem77fp '88 in france you know ?
i found some reissue fp for 1800 euros (edge pro of course).
i don't say it's a good price but i don't know... it is a 88 jem fp !

i found a seller for a ibanez edge (70 euros) in better condition. i think it's a good opportunity to replace the floyd.
may be, with some new screws and steel wool and it could b a pretty beautiful fp ?

oh ! is it possible to use the steel wool on the pickups (where it's rusted of course) ???

here is couple of pictures the seller send me, wht's your opinion guys ?

Re: Rusted frets on a JEM77FP 1988 ? HELP ME.

An other questions folks please !

Would it be possible to get off this used Edge and put an Lo-pro Edge without touching the cavity tremolo ? I've got one in good condition on a '00 RG550.

Thanks.

Re: Rusted frets on a JEM77FP 1988 ? HELP ME.

if you use steel wool to clean the frets... be sure to use masking tape either side of the fret wire to avoid damage to your fretboard...also use some cutting compound or polish with the steel wool....the fret wire comes up like brand new....Top Tip

Re: Rusted frets on a JEM77FP 1988 ? HELP ME.

I know that I could make that guitar look almost new with not too much work. Overall the guitar is in very good condition under the light rust and general dirtiness. I'd see if the seller would drop their price a bit. You could put a LoPro Edge on there, but my opinion is that you should have an Edge on there since the guitar is an '88.

Do not use steel wool on the pickups, you will wind up ruining them. I won't even use it on frets, I stick with better products that are safer and perform better. If you have to use the 0000 then be sure you tape up the pickups to keep wool fibers from getting inside the coils.
