Should I mod my 7dbk?

Anyone do a makeover on there 7DBK? I have a mint 2004 that I was thinking of painting and maybe a new pick guard. Since there doesn't seem to be any kind of collector interest on these models, thought it wouldn't really be a loss redoing the body. I play it daily and do not want to change the neck in anyway. Leaving the pickups alone too, I like the breeds and not looking to invest too much into a project. Mostly doing this out of boredom. So Im thinking of ideas with the black pu's, original neck, and maybe change the pick guard and body.

No. Leave it as is.

Yep, do it up, they are one of those JEMs, I don't feel is really a JEM.
If it doesn't have a Vine or Pyramids, then it's not a JEM to me.

Re: Should I mod my 7dbk?

just buy an aftermarket body, area 51, ET, etc... then if you ever want to go back you can. Just because they are not that desirable today doesn't mean in a year from now that won't change, then you will be kicking yourself. Plus stripping a guitar is a pain and a fresh body makes it so much easier/faster.

just my $.02

I don't see how folks don't love that guitar. It's so raw-looking and weird. It's so Vai. I really wanted one about a decade ago.

+1

Aftermarket bodies are not that expensive, and you can easily return your guitar to its original state in the future.

Re: Should I mod my 7dbk?

I would leave it as/is. I, personally, love the DBK. I couldn't justify stripping your guitar when it's mint, as you say.

I think an aftermarket body would cure your boredom too....... and probably make you appreciate the finish you have all the more.

If you can't stop yourself, sell it to me before you strip it. I have a ton of guitars around here that you can mod til your blue in the face....LOL

Re: Should I mod my 7dbk?

DBK is pretty cool as it is, but once you had that thought... there is no turning back I doubt there will ever be any collector interest it this guitar, but personally i like it a lot and some day will have it in my stable.

No way, leave it as is unless you got a couple of originals more!
Customize = bust the price!!

Re: Should I mod my 7dbk?

I thought about the aftermarket body, but do not want any change in the way the guitar is setup. Maybe I should just by an old 550 and have my way with it. Maybe a swirl is in the future. Havent done one of those in a few years.

Re: Should I mod my 7dbk?

The 7dbk has a wonderful neck profile, I really want to get one to back up my 90 HAM.

Maybe I'm just being obtuse, but I don't see how putting your DBK parts on an aftermarket body would affect the setup any more than pulling the guitar apart, stripping it, refinishing it, etc, then reassembling...

You'll still have to set the guitar back up, regardless of which path you take to customization.

If you'd like it better modded, then mod it. Don't worry about the possible value to someone else, think about the value to you.
