Signed Jem 777 VBK - Valuation please, if possible!!

Hi All,

Apologies in advance for posting a 'What's my Jem Worth' thread....but i have one i'm thinking of selling and really don't know where to pitch it, so i thought i'd ask before posting in the classifieds forum.

It's a 1991 Jem 777 VBK, all original, in excellent condition with just a few light laquer marks/scratches on the back. No dings as far as i remember, but i'll confirm this later when i inspect it and take some pics (can't check at the moment as it's late and i'll only wake my other half up if i try and check it now!!!). Apart from that it could just do with a decent trem set up, as at the moment the trem has a lot of dive, but not a lot of pull....if that makes sense.
Finally, it has a hardcase, but unfortunately not the original Ibanez type.

The main reason i'm having trouble putting a price on this one are firstly, because it's one of those that you either love or hate, and secondly because this one just happens to have a signature on the trem cover by a certain Steve Vai, dated 1993, which i believe to be genuine. I also have a replacement Ibanez trem cover, so as not to damage the signature but keep the guitar complete.

I'll post some more pics as soon as i can, but in the meantime, the one below should give a fair idea on overall condition.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Signed Jem 777 VBK - Valuation please, if possible!!

About two months ago to a guy in Guam for $1850 US. It is a '91 despite the 90XXXX serial number. The two very minor edge dings are pictured, but otherwise the guitar was in excellent condition. An original Jem case would have increased the price.

I would put an unsigned trem cover on the guitar if you have one. Signatures decrease the value of the guitar. I'm completely serious. Unless your guitar is a factory-signed limited edition, like the JEM777LNG or RBM2NT, the signature decreases the value. Thankfully yours is on a cover that can easily be replaced.

Curious to know why ppl think that sigs decrease the value of a guitar. I know that Vai signs thousands of these things per year, but more generally speaking, a signature on one of (say) Paul Macartney's instruments pretty much adds a few extra zeroes....

Hi All,

Thanks for all the input so far.

I was hoping for somewhere around the £1150-£1200.00 mark, which equates to $1866-$1950 at todays exchange rate, so not too far out.

As for the signature, i don't neccesarily agree that it decreases the guitars value. I appreciate that if it was in a stupid position, i.e. it would likely fade or rub off as soon as the guitar was played then yeah maybe.

Bare in mind, that this one has a spare original Ibanez trem cover, making it both collectable and playable.

Dave

Oh, I don't think so. It may not have the popularity of the DY or LNG but the 77VBK is not one of the cheapest Jems.
You could easily get what you're looking for on it.
