Steve Vai Universe Prototype? $35k?

Hi!
Just saw this today, and it grabbed a "Whaaaa???" from deep inside and ripped it forth.
item #180695663400
Price? $35k.

Seems well documented, but I had not heard of this one before. Wonder if it will sell for that price.

I saw it too! Very well kept for a 1990, and that writing on the back sure looks like Steve's...

"Vai got his first 7-string, a prototype, while he was working with Whitesnake, and played that guitar on most of Whitesnake's 1989 album Slip of the Tongue. He suggested a few subtle changes - the original neck was a little too chunky, for example - and the prototype was soon honed into the Ibanez Universe 7-string."

Damn me, guess it's that one then! Volume knob positioning would be another clue it's early.

Re: Steve Vai Universe Prototype? $35k?

wow!!!! i was searching infos on that particular guitar for a couple of weeks.

I got a copy of Whitesnake's new dvd (donnington 90), and there's a documentary of Slip of the tongue era. The only moment Steve's on it, is when he is recording, if memory serves right Kitten's got claws, and he is using that exact same guitar. The tones and playing on that record still give me chills.

amazing news on the prototype. thanks for sharing !! :-D

It's a beautiful guitar with an amazing history & story to go with it that's for sure! Whoever gets it will not be dissapointed. It looks super clean for its age so it's definitely been locked tight in its case for these years.

Interesting that it says "Jem" on the headstock........ They must have come up with the "Universe" name after this was made.

Does anybody know who Richard is? It looks like the guitar was given to him, then given away again, maybe?
