Steve Vai's modified 777's

Doing some random searching about JEM wiring, I came across a few cool things. (Sorry if these were already brought up in the past)

One being a pic from the 1988 Skyscraper tour in Biloxi, MS (I was actually at this concert in Biloxi back then, but my knowledge of JEMs back then was low).

Anyway, Steve with an LNG with looks to be a floral neck

Another cool pic I came across (see link below) was this trinity pic, with a modified DY that was said to be Steve Vai's on the Skyscraper tour.

1987 Ibanez Jem777 in Desert Yellow (made for and owned by Steve Vai- customized personal favorite guitar used on David Lee Roth "Skyscraper" tour-signed- Vai gave this away for a children's hospital charity benefit-signed on the back by Vai declaring it: "To a worthy cause-this is my personal favorite guitar-Skyscraper '88- Steve Vai")

Can't link to the pic but you can see it here.

Steve seem to be more partial to floral necks.

Very cool find! Believe it or not I saw that exact guitar at a guitar exhibit at the Science Museum of Virginia about 6 months back, I have a picture of it in it's display case and description of how it contributed to the history of the electric guitar as we know it today! There was no Floral headstock on it though, it was like it was a VLNG if they actually produced the LNG's with a vine like the VSK and VDY!

Re: Steve Vai's modified 777's

I would love to see that pic if you can find it.

You may be right, that might be a one and only VLNG, all of the "V" 777 (VDY & VSK) switch tips matched the color of the guitar (VDY had yellow tip, and VSK had pink tip), this guitar in the pic has a green tip which would go inline with what a VLNG would have looked like.

Yeah, this one doesn't look like a floral headstock, I just called it that because the rosewood board and vine, but looks just black with purple logo.

But, would love to see that one you had in the display.

I have a pic of the guitar Steve Vai used in crossroads (Pre Ibanez days) that was at a Casino in Biloxi, MS

Re: Steve Vai's modified 777's

Yeah, I posted those pics sometime last year of Vai's floral with the pyramids. It was in an old guitar magazine I had, the pics are not on my server anymore. I'll have to repost them.

About the Jackson, I don't enough about them to tell the model. But, that movie was the sole purpose I started playing guitar back then.

From everything I've read (and I've done a lot of searching no that particular guitar) it's a San Dimas era Charvel body with a Jackson logo neck and a Charvel neck plate that was given to Steve by Grover Jackson.

Re: Steve Vai's modified 777's

That green Jem is the final prototype of the Jem. It's the very first Jem that has the complete shape and details of the Jem as we know it.

It has a hand carved lions claw. It also used to have an original LNG neck, but that one broke during a tour, so it got replaced with the neck you see on it now. The guitar was given away long ago, but came back into Steve's possession a few years ago along with the original broken neck, after it's owner wanted to sell it. I actually came pretty close to buying it myself, but thankfully Steve wanted it back, where it really belongs.
It's now on loan to that museum.

I have a few decent pictures of it somewhere, I had a chance to play with it back in 09 I think, when it was just coming back to Steve and was with Mikey to be photographed.
The original strings from that tour were still on it.

A very unique piece of Jem history.

I'd love to know more about the Jackson/Charvel from Crossroads, god knows how many times I've seen that movie.

Anyone know what the body wood was and also what pups are in it?

Re: Steve Vai's modified 777's

There's actually a "Jack Butler" Jackson CS thread on this very site :
http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f19/st...ar-102892.html

It's funny that this guitar became a legend among us, considering it's just a prop used for shooting the movie, not a guitar Steve Vai extendly played live, or used on any album. For what we know, the original guitar may sound and play like a cheap chinese replica
I really love the "Jack Butler" tone in the movie but that guitar wasn't the source of that tone
