Smile Steve's guitar 'Flo'

Did anyone notice in the old days Flo had a half tree of life inlay and half dots down the neck?

I noticed it when my uncle showed pics of Vai from the 90's and I found pics on of 'Flo' Google!

Here's the link

FLO had a 555 neck for a while.

Re: Steve's guitar 'Flo'

It's Jem 555 neck I believe. The first couple of frets are curled in the same way the true temperament system is (which he's experimenting with now).

If I'm right, Evo had a 555 neck too at some point... :S

Re: Steve's guitar 'Flo'

The 555 neck was used because Steve wanted to switch to rosewood and it took Ibanez some time to get him a batch or rosewood boarded VWH necks.

Can somebody tell me what Mr Vai uses for the bridge pickup? Is it Evo2 or Evolution.

Vai uses Evolutions, but he tames them down with 250K pots. Also, they may be direct mounted in Flo, as Flo is a (take note) former 77FP, so she has a basswood body and is routed for a rear routed cavity.

He also uses the Trans Jem pickups (in his JEM20th) and Breeds (in Mojo). I don't believe he uses the Evo2 at all.

That's what I thought too actually. Yes Jems come with 500k pots.

Re: Steve's guitar 'Flo'

He might have evo2's in one of his back up jems, but to be honest, he uses them for a few songs, otherwise he relies on his EVO's for 60% of his work, than the breed's play a big role too and so on so forth. He asks for something, for a particular reason, it comes out nice, and dimarzio decides to offer them. Which is not a bad idea, the more tools everyone can use to find their own sound, the better. I personally believe the Paf Pro's are much more versatile than his evo's, and the raw tone and personality they provide according to everyone's touch is amazing. It creates a tone unique to everyone. Think of all the good things these pick-ups meant to his career. Possibly the best things he's ever written were first played with Paf Pro!

I think its rear routed too, on the astoria dvd (flo is the backup with sustainer right?) you can see especially at the pickup selector, the pickguard is routed a bit thicker to make room for the switch top cause the switch comes out the body, not the pickguard.

Re: Steve's guitar 'Flo'

I was just browsing through vai's forum, the admin tech there says Mr Vai is using Evo2 on his flo, he swap out the gold pole Paf pro in 1995.

It's weird, when I saw him last summer, during the EVO experience in Tempe, AZ, someone asked him why he prefers rosewood, and his reply was that he has no preference. Not saying you are wrong Rich, I know better. Maybe his tastes have changed again, or he just didn't want to offend ebony & maple fans?

Compensating for FLO being basswood instead of alder perhaps?
