Swirl Green/Black JEM77GMC

A Guitar Center near me has a used JEM77GMC for $399. There's quite a bit of cosmetic damage, paint chips here and there, not very noticable from a couple feet away, but you definately see them holding the guitar. It plays and sounds like nothing I've ever played before. Saying it's amazing would be an understatement. Do you guys think that it would be a good buy? I've already put $100 down on it just in case.

Oh and also, what should I look for as far as defects go, are there and known problems where damage can occur without it being blatantly obvious?

As long as it's a genuine GMC, just buy it. For $400 it's a steal no matter what condition it's in.

It's definately genuine. I knew it was rare. As soon as I saw it I grabbed it and gave it to the salesman. The biggest flaw I saw was a paint chip that near the upper strap button. It was about 1/2" in diameter and looked like it needed filling. I won't strap the guitar on until that's fixed. Man this is exciting...

Question: It's got the original dimarzio pickups in it, what kind are they? And if I replace them will it lessen the value of the instrument at all?

Original p'ups will be black/green PAF Pro dimarzio, and a Jem single coil

Given the cosmetic damage I think new pickups may enhance value rather than lessening it.
Keep the originals handy if you want to sell it.

Cheers

I just picked it up. It's a bit more beat up than I had thought. Makes me mad at whoever had this gem of a JEM before me. I'll try and snag my friend's digicam and get some pics of this puppy.

The serial number is 916983, but wouldn't that make it a '91? I thought the GMC's were only made in '92 and 93? It's got the ATD stamp in the neck pocket and everything else points to it as being genuine.

Both my GMCs have been 91 plates so don't worry about it. My bet is that the guitars were allocated for swirling, it took a while to get them all painted, cleared and assembled and ready for shipping.

Other folks will know for sure why the plates are 91's on guitars supposedly from 92/93, but in truth I never worry about it

And yes get some piccies ASAP

Very jealous here.

That is one of the few Jems that I would go out of my way for!
