Re: top mount vs bottom mount

For one thing, top mounted nuts are less prone to the stress cracks on the back of the neck.

let the record show there is a dirty joke somewhere in there. Specifically referring to "bottom mounted nuts". It probably involves Cubs fans

Re: top mount vs bottom mount

Generally only artist models like the Jem still have traditional nuts any longer. But that's because the artist gets to call out whatever they want, hence why the Jem and JS now have the original Edge bridge.

Indeed.

Shear force on a rigid structure goes to the weakest section.

All JEM's are thru mount. I hate top mount, but Japan loves them so we're stuck with them.

Re: top mount vs bottom mount

Too many reason, some of which -

They strip very easy, if they're not already stripped right out of the factory.
If they're not perfectly centered you can't just fudge the nut over, it's stuck there, without reworking the holes.
They oval over time, and have to be fixed [I've had to do 3 already].

Everything [almost] has a volute now, there is absolutely no reason to top mount.

Re: top mount vs bottom mount

Ibanez seems to still be in the mode where they feel they need to "improve" their guitars with things like top-mount nuts, new bridges, etc. Yet some of their most expensive artist models have old technology like Edge bridges, thru-mount nuts and square heels.

Companies like Gibson and Fender basically only make vintage-style instruments any longer. I wonder if we'll ever see Ibanez go to making 87-93 era stuff as their main models?

If that is true one might think Ibanez should take a hint from the pros and what they request. Typically professionals don't request inferior items for themselves..
