Universe with fretwave in Brazil

Folks,

I just got back from a the local street full of instrument vendors here in Brazil (Sao Paulo),and there I found an used Universe UV777Bk with the fretwave system installed (the second and the third frets are twisted in a strange way, but it helps to solve tuning problems(esp. open chords).

It is a used guitar, and the salesman said that Steve Vai, gave this guitar to a family he keeps in the north region (i think it is Bahia) and the owner sold it to the store

Does anyone know the true behind this strange UV ?

They are asking US$ 2000.

Vai gave it to a "family he keeps" in Brazil? Huh? I suppose that anything is possible, but...that doesn't sound very likely

Without some sort of documentation, I'd say that it's not worth anymore than a regular UV777BK.

You might try e-mailing the guys at www.vai.com and see if they have any input though.

I've never heard of this thing before, but evidently Steve uses/used it:

Can't say I'd be up for it. Wouldn't this be similar to the Feiten system?

Steve curently uses the Feiten system, which is pretty much the same thing. I hadn't heard "Fretwave" used until Yamaha introduced it on the Gambale models. It might just be their version of the Feiten system.

I recall reading that the 555 neck had an early version of the Feiten system that didn't involve moving the nut, thus the "bent" frets.

vai had this on an axe (see jemsite photo gallery - vai's axes) used for a few songs. by no means does he use it exclusively & it's uncertain if he uses it on any of his current axes today. we'll know more at G3 if it's being used live... glen

I don't think Vai has family in Brazil, but he once had a brazilian assistant (Sergio Buss). Maybe he gave the guitar to him?

it's a genuine Universe, not a Jem nor even a 555

I also think that having a family in Brazil is quite strange, but hey Jimmy Page now lives in Bahia

Sergio Buss, Steve's assistant from the Alien Love Secrets/Firegarden era lives in my city - Sao Paulo - not in other city, and the closest thing to a UV that Steve gave him was a set of blaze pickups and a Lo Pro Edge, that he a luthier built him a custom 7 string - check his site www.serj.net , amazing player and cool dude.

Also the fretwave site is www.fretwave.com

I saw this UV in person, here in São Paulo (Teodoro Sampaio Street).
To me, seems to be just a regular UV777BK with some modifications (Buzz Feiten, for shure).
The sale price of this one is just "as usual as ever" for a overseas and SouthAmerica (US$2000,00 or R$5900,00).
About Vai's family living in Bahia, i think it's a very 'cr5azy' history...LOL!!!
(Sorry the bad english)

Yes, you're right.
I saw this one in person, and the nut is intact and original.
