Question Universe UV7BK fretwire?

Hey guys, I know the 7VWH uses Warmoth 6105 frets (h .047", w .096").
I own a 1996 UV7BK, and I couldn't find any info about the fretwire.
Does anyone know what is it?

Re: Universe UV7BK fretwire?

The UV7BK uses Dunlop 6140 as do all the old UVs.

Thanks for the info, Dave.

So let me ask another thing: on Ibanez site, all RGs are listed as having "jumbo" frets, just like the UVs. Is this the same Dunlop 6140?

I'm not Dave, but let me answer. Depending on the crown and width of the fretwire, many fretwire sizes may be covered under the "Jumbo" heading. there must be some sort of threshold size after which it is considered jumbo in other words.

Check this chart. It lists many different sizes under the heading "Large or Jumbo"

One thing you need to keep in mind though. Numbering differs between manufacturers (not surprised right ), so Dunlop's 6105 above has different crown (E in chart) and width (B) from Warmoth's 6105, which is actually manufactured by Jescar.

Jescar seems to have common sense and names their fretwire by crown and width dimensions. For example, their 47095 fretwire has a crown height of 0.047" and a width of 0.095". Who'd a thunk it would be that easy right .

Hope this helps.

Sure! The question was open to everyone.

As for the jumbo confusion, that's exactly why I asked about the specs of the UV and RG fretwire. Being "jumbo" an umbrella term for dozens of specs, I'd like to know if UVs and RGs share the same jumbo.

Re: Universe UV7BK fretwire?

Not knowing what brand and specs RGs use as fret wire, I think it would be quite difficult to find out. To make things even muddier, what dunlop classifies as "Jumbo or Large" 6105 (.055 by .090) is considered "Tall and Thin" by its closest (by name and dimension respectively) "cousins"; Warmoth 6105 (.045 by .095) and Jescar 47095 (.047 by .095). Go figure.

Of course, we're talking about fractions of mms of difference here, so in the end when the fretboard is leveled and crowned, you may end up with a much different fret wire than you started with

Yeah, just fractions of millimiters indeed... but you know, as a gear freak I'd really like to know the answer for this
