UV7PWH pickups - Difference between new and old?

Just about a week ago, my single coil died in my Universe. I have a PWH. I bought a replacement, white of course, but something bugged me about it. I couldn't figure it out, until sitting at dinner, i noticed my old pickup had silver poles, whereas the new ones have black allen screws. I apologize if this was covered previously, but I was curious as to why they changed. It sounds fine, which is what matters, but curiosity made me turn to the experts...

How'd it die out? Most UV's dating pre-'91 (maybe a certain few post-'90 UV's as well) had pole pieces for the single coil. I actually saw a UV7BK at GC Sherman Oaks (i think it's still there hanging next to a Jem777DY ) that had a '91 serial # but had pole pieces on the single coil.
I would presume they (Ibanez or Dimarzio) changed the poles to screws for the guitar player to make adjustments or what not :P

The switch to the adjustable poles was made in 91'.

I don't know why man...it just did. I was playing and there was a staticy sound then a pop, then nothing from the single coil anymore... I opened it up and looked at the wiring, thinking it was a loose connection, but nay...it was still hooked up. *The new one sounds fine nonetheless. I bought it used, so who knows what it has had done to it. It was in perfect shape, but I took the frets off and put new 6100's on it.
