This may sound dumb but i was wondering what vai puts on his headstock to hold the picks up there?

Doesn't that make the picks sticky? I've never tried it, so I don't know...

From my understanding, it is actually gaffers/duct tape. If you take the tape and wrap it around your finger sticky side out, it will work. Flatten it out, either on the body or headstock, and you are good to go. Picks will attach and release quickly.

Two sided mounting tape flakes off on the picks and is a pain to get off of the guitar.

He tapes the back end of the pick on. the sharp end (the side that point that actually touches the strings) is not touching the tape. Simple enough.

I don't get why people need more than a pick or two for a gig.. Some people insist that it's too hard to hold onto a sweaty pick... And heck, I use stubbies, they're slippery little buggers. Just put on a thin layer of rubber cement before you go on stage, let it dry, and voila, a super-rubbery-grippy pick!
