Talking Van Halen Jem

Hey has anybody ever done the eddie van halen frankenstein paintjob to a Jem? My guess is yes, possibly even cliche' by now. But anyways I'm working on one. Just need to post a couple more entries so I can embed stuff?. My picture uploads failed and they're only like 300k. Blarg, maybe I can post them via a hyperlink... grumble grumble.

Re: Van Halen Jem

Are you going to do it over in red? As you said, it's pretty nice in black and white...

Re: Van Halen Jem

Here's a couple more of where it's at now. I did it over in red, then distressed it, then put a couple coats of clear on it. I think I'm going to continue building up the clear to preserve the relic look. Almost silly to "preserve" the beat up look but If anyone understands it's the guitarist community, ha ha!

First Painted Red

Then the relic look with clear coat. Looks cool!

So here's my next question- Hardware! Got a Flamed maple neck ibz style made by Deep 6 guitars. Ever heard of 'em? Got a chrome nut, cut a black 550 pickguard to cover the cavity. Got a 500k dimarzio pot, and a fender strat football jack for the front where I modded the body. plus after about 4 months of looking found a 71 quarter. Almost went with an '87 (Im sure you know why lol) So I'm torn thinking "do I put an edge or lo pro in, OR an original Floyd Rose?" I believe either will fit. Do I stay more true to the Eddie, or the Steve? and what about that pickup? Thinking either a GFS guitar fetish VEH or an Evo. TORN! Help me out experts! (and thanks for diggin' my little project : )

Re: Van Halen Jem

I'd go chrome Edge (Gotta love the Edge) and Bareknuckle VHII http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZH-vhii.html But then I'm in the UK...
Look forward to seeing the finished article.

Neat!

You look, and it's like "Oh, there's another EVH clone"...

Then, "wha...? Dude, that's a Jem!"

I dig!

Re: Van Halen Jem

Pickups bolted to the body I assume, I would go with original floyd rose if you can get one cheap, but edge in chrome will work fine. One volume knob? You could do the whole pickup switch in the cavity thing and put one red pickup at the neck like franky. Would be interesting to see all those things imo.

Re: Van Halen Jem

Yeah looks like a Chrome edge will be around 75 to a hundred bucks more than an OFR. I prefer a real edge or lo pro over an OFR of course, but Eddie used a floyd, and I've got a RG520 with a real floyd in it, and it comes back just fine. Yeah pickups bolted to the body, one volume. I am wiring the neck pickup so it actually works and having a 5-way toggle that actually works also. The guitar will be wired like a Telecaster pretty much. Should get some crazy tones out of that. Haven't decided if I want the middle position to be a dead spot or not. If I don't like the tone of that position that's what I'll probably do.
