Want to get a new 7 string... - Top of the line from Ibanez.

Hi everyone, i'm saving my money to get a new 7 string. I'm very interested a "really" good one, a top of the line model.

Most companies out there are removing 7 string from their catalog for 2002 but from looking at the pics of NAMM 2002 from Ibanez Rulez web site, i can see Ibanez is still making a bunch of them...

So can anyone help me select a model??? I know about the "Universe" model. But are they still making a pro "RG" version. I can only see those "XL" model on their web site. I want a regular neck.

Hope someone can help.

The UV777BK, the K7, and the RG1077XL are the only high-end 7-strings left everywhere but Japan. *The XL has gotten good reports from owners, the UV777BK obviously kicks major @$$. *The K7 is basically an RG-7620 with the U-bar, an angled-input jack (like the JEM), PAF-7s, and some cosmetic changes (like that dorky inlay, gah!). *

Hey welcome to the forum!

Firstly I suggest you go try the models available, they are all very different from one another. I own the UV777bk, it's one of the best 7 strings I've ever come across. Frankly speaking if you're gonna get yourself a 7, go with ibanez, don't even bother with the other brands.

But when purchasing a Universe, remember that you're paying for a lot of other stuff, such as the "signature model status", the inlays, etc. You might also want to check out the XL series, the finishes are pretty nice, especially that blue sparkle one. And the sound and tone is really killer!

Go try out the models and see for yourself man, that IMHO is the best way...

Chris.

Oh, and keep in mind, any other 7-string other than these 3 will have the TRS-7 (pronounced "crap"). *These 3 all have the Lo-Pro-7, and the K7 has an extra hole on the low-B side for the U-Bar or for when you feel like doing your best Hendrix. *

I would also like to suggest that you look into the older Universe models that isn't produced anymore. They're still killer guitars and you can get them for a fraction of what you have to pay for a new one.

Look for used stuff, like on e(vil)-bay. *There's usually some good stuff. I think there's usually at least one RG-7620 going for cheap.

The XL has a 27" scale. *If you want a regular scale, high-end 7-string from Ibanez, you have to get a UV777BK, or K7, unless you're fine with buying used. *Then any UV, or RG-7620.

Check out ishibashis web site its in the links section of jemsite. They have lots of good 7 strings.. Personally if your going for the "econo" way.. *You can get a pretty good axe if you buy the 2027x. It has a peizo. IF you switch tht pickups to what ever you like its amazing .. IT will come alot cheaper then a UV.

The K7 is also differentiated from the 7620 by its mahogany body. The 7620 is basswood.

I've noticed this year that a lot of 7-strings have disappeared from the market. Stores are blowing out their ESP LTD 7's because ESP has discontinued them (i'm mighty tempted to get an H-207). The Squier Fat Strat 7's and Stagemaster 7's are gone. The market is getting mighty thin... especially in the high end.

I suggest an Ernie Ball Musicman John Petrucci Model 7 string. *I find that I like playing it more than the JPM 6 string. *Tone is great, build quality is great, electronics are great, blah blah blah... *Try one, if you like the Ibanez models I guarantee you'll like the EBMM.

The RG2027 is in no way an "econo" guitar. At list price $1700, it's top o'the line. (It's a Prestige for crying out loud!) As good as the Universe, but with piezos in the Lo-Pro Edge trem bridge! Whoa! Just doesn't have the association with Steve Vai, so... Ta da! It's cheaper. I got mine for $1200, and it is grrrrreat! But! The UV777BK (Universe) is soooo nice, don't misunderstand me. The 2027 should have the pickups changed, but realize they are as good or better than maybe 50-70% of 'stock' pickups out there. Most decent aftermarket pickups are probably better, however (DiMarzios, Duncans, EMG's, etc.) Check out Ishibashi.com. The 2027 is maybe the best production 7 ever.
