Were Jems actually produced every year or only in batches?

Like the title says, were various Jems actually produced in every year that they were sold? I ask this because it seems like the ones I see for sale are usually from the same years. Several examples:

FP - I see a lot of 88's for sale but almost never an 89 or 90. I actually had an 89 that was a complete beater, but I've seen few if any since.

DY - Again, where are the 89 and 90 models? I see 87's and 88's and then Lo-Pro models.

GMC - These were sold in 92 and 93, yet every one I've seen has a 91 serial number. My assumption is that they built all 366 of them in a giant lot near the end of 1991 and then sold them until they were gone, which took two years.

1989 and 1990 in particular seem to be huge holes in the production of certain guitars. My PBK has an 89 serial, but that makes sense because that's when they entered production. I had a VBK with a 90 serial as well.

My dy is '89. Edge, volume knob on its later position. But...the body is stamped VDY. I asked richy 13years ago and he said 'same body'.

I'm guessing that my original question was too broadly stated, although I get the feeling that the truth is closer to the idea that production was widely uneven.

There are plenty of other guitars that fit this pattern (RG1570 for example). If demand doesn't meet your forecast, you might end up with some guitars sitting for a long time before being sold. Subsequent year production might be much lower, or even nonexistent.

What got me thinking about this is that people often get hung up on when a guitar was purchased, or try and compare serial numbers against catalogs.

are you serious ??

We are in a forum about specific type of guitar, made by a specific type of brand, about a specific year that said guitar was made in... if you don't get that you're a geek, then maybe you need to re evaluate your life :P

I'm a geek? Being very knowledgable about a GUITAR makes you a geek?

Maybe it's just because your from an aging generation, but guitars are cool at my age right now, I hope that never changes.

But, you don't have to twist my arm to convince me your a geek

The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe odd or non-mainstream people, with different connotations ranging from "an expert or enthusiast" to "a person heavily interested in a hobby".

Bryan, some day you'll come to embrace the fact that you're a total geek. My friends and I have all embraced the fact that we're all total geeks and have completely uncool interests. We're much happier that way.

Recently, we've been laughing about how we've turned into total snobs too because our new favorite leisure activity is going to whisky bars and drinking expensive scotch.
