Exclamation Whammy problems :(

I have a JEM 555, and I seem to be having a problem with the whammy bar. Every time I use it, it works itself loose and it wobbles (I think it's called backlash) which prevents me from bouncing the strings. It is still the original whammy that came with it. I was wondering if any of you guys have had the same problem and/or know how to fix it?

Thanks, Tom

well, the trem that came in these is utter crap so the arm will never stay very tight for very long. but i think you have to pull the thing out to tighten it.

yea, pull out the trem (and dont remove the strings or play with the spring tension if you can help it. because then when you put the trem back in, it will automatically be in tune) and look on the bottom of where the arm goes in. there should be a screw. make it tighter. then you can flutter all day

Re: Whammy problems :(

If it is the trs-II forget anything but changing it for a gotoh floyd rose. I recommend you to do the mod supervised or directly by a luthier, because you need to drill the holes of the anchors for the trem-posts. I ruined my 555 doing that and had to buy a new body.

If it is the edge-pro III you can make it work with minor set-up tweaks to some extent, but never expect it to function as an edge/lo-pro edge.

I just took the backplate off and was able to tighten it from there but it still doesn't seem to be staying tight. I think it's the nut on the whammy bar you tighten by hand that keeps unscrewing itself, I tried using pliers to tighten it and it still works it's way loose. Is there a whammy bar that will fit the trem that I can tighten down with a spanner?

You mean Edge III.
Also--the mod is pretty easy to do. Project guitar has a great tutorial for it.

Err, who do you think makes edge/lo pro? That said, what trem did you try to use? Most are drop in replacements...

If it's an Edge 3 you can drop an Edge Pro right in.

Re: Whammy problems :(

I think I might replace the tremolo arm and socket for Schaller ones. I have no idea how to take out the socket (tremolo arm holder), does anyone know where to get a tutorial? My tremolo is the LO-TRS floyd rose.
