Sometimes I wonder if it isn't just marketing to promote the new model. It just surprises me that for so long Joe used mainly 22 fret JS1000/1200's and all of a sudden he's using mainly his 2400 and it seems like every photo has him with the white one in hand after the photos of him with the red one in hand for years.... What was the setlist?
I'm sure it's all about what's feeling right for him at the time, but at times, I've wondered the same thing. I saw him in London a few weeks back and could see his guitar rack from my seat (2nd row!) From memory he had two 2400's (a white one and the orange/red one), two 1200's (one with the sustaniac) ,the Experience Hendrix single coil guitar and a JSA10.
The only one I really wanted to see/hear was the Experience Hendrix guitar, but it never came out of the rack. He used the 2400's for pretty much everything apart from the 1200's on a few tracks.
However when I saw him on the Satchafunkilus tour he used a stack of guitars - including the Blackdog and JS20th which were the new guitars out at the time.
To be fair though, if you have new guitars in your rack, why wouldn't you use them? I just wish we could have heard the single coil guitar.
It was a great show the other week, although Joe seemed a bit subdued - especially compared to Paul Gilbert last Friday, who was really engaging with the audience and clearly absolutely loving every minute of it. For the record he played the red Fireman from the cover of Fuzz Universe for the entire gig and the single coils in that thing sound incredible......
I have to say though that despite being a die hard Satriani for almost 20 years, Jeff Beck at the Albert Hall the week after was in a different league
