What are vine inlays made of?

My friend says they are colored phenolic plastic. I told him he's wrong and that these guitars are way more quality than cheap plastic inlays.
Thanks MIJ

not this again

why is plastic "cheap"

your friend is right, because plastic is the only material available in such bright colors, that is also very workable. Some JEMs have real shell/abalone, such as the JEM10 and the small leafs on the VWH neck.

Search the forum for more discussion on this topic... glen

i believe what's cheap or not about the inlays is the process itself. paying someone with enough experience to install a clean (that is well cut and no traces of glue) vine will cost a lot more than materials

and if you or your friend find fluorescent green abalone, give me a call.

this is Ed Roman in person, hello Ed.........what a jocker you are!!

nb:I think also that abalone is a cheap material compare to diamond, and wood id cheap compare to platinum.

I could only understand a concern about materials if there was a spec change at some point (like when I asked on another topic) if Ibanez ever used real abalone on the pyramid inlays instead of the pearloid and mock abalone? The colored ones are obviously (so far) clear plastic with color applied underneath. If you like the inlay, who cares what it's made of? It's OK as long as you are not being told it's one thing and are getting something else.

OK, I understand - I didn't know what the hell those inlays were made of either before I got edjucatted.
I've cooled down. The inlays are made from soylent green.

Inlays can be whatever you want them to be basically.

I do the vines with plastics (synthetic shell or colors) metals, real shell etc. The difference in the cost of the material isn't much, maybe $40 from low to high, but, the cost of labor, increases dramatically when using real shell, or metals.

What the inlay is made of, is almost irrelavant, the reason they are called inlays, it they are "inlayed" into the material.

Ed Roman can blow himself, he hasn't got a clue! LOL

I think that Ed Roman tool who's making tons of money off of something he seems to despise so much is opening up a store here in Sunny Las Vegas. I hope he dies.
On a happier note... check out the work on the LGM site (lgm-guitars.com). I'm impressed with the chrome vine inlay on the 7DBK... I'm thinking about sending mine off for the same. I don't see anything wrong with plastic, but I was a little dissapointed with the [EDITED OFFENSIVE SLUR] paper inlays under the plastic...

Question Re: What are vine inlays made of?

So it IS paper under the plastic leaf inlay on a 77FP neck?

Not paint or anything else?

Where do they sell it?

How is the Red stem done?
