Who would you recommend to build a body? And out of what?

Well, just got hold of a jem pbk neck (yes!!!!!!) and think I might just have to build a guitar round it, so will be off looking for a body for it.

Now, i want something different than basswood for a start, further, I am think of either getting alder or a mahogony with maple cap, just as i want it to complement the guitars I already have (ie, i have a mahogony s, swamp ash/maple lacs, basswood rg and a basswood jem) so want tonal variety.

So basically, what do you guys reckon in terms of wood choice, and who would you recommend to make it for me? I want a good job doing, as it NEEDS to be able to survive a touiring enviroment.

I am thinking of going with simms again, as the swamp ash body he made for the UV from hell came out really well.

Well I would say Paduak. The tone is fantastic, although it is heavy, so touring might be difficult. Saying that I am looking at making a chambered body with a maple cap.

As far as who to build it, I have just been to see this guy Graham Parker to get some inlay work done (http://grahamparkerluthier.com/). I have only just handed over the guitar, but he seems to be a very straight forward guy to deal with. I saw some of his work in progress while I was there and it looks good.

Other than that, doesn't Jaden build customs?

I would also say paduak. Nick's right it's a heavy wood and therefore can stand a knock or two. It just sounds great

Jaden Rose certainly used to make custom bodies, but I know he has some very cool projects in the works at the moment, so his waiting times might be a bit longer than normal. Also I know having spoken with him recently he's been looking to concentrate on his own designs.

I've been to his workshop, and I've talked "tone" with him. He's got a thoroughly impressive setup there and really knows what he's on about.

I'd get one ordered now if I were you

(no I'm not a Jaden endorser, but there's something very reassuring about a guy who invites you to his home to talk about a custom guitar rather than simply sending off a 1 page form via a dealership). I trust him enough that he's got one of my guitars in at the moment.

I have Nate Perle doing one for me now. Getting basswood this time but will probably get a mahogany one next time. My PGM10th's are mahogany and they are hardcore, soundwise.

I'd avoid Dr Frankenstein's work - very scruffy, but I'd recommend using parts from female adult film stars for the ideal body.

Re: Who would you recommend to build a body? And out of what?

Just to tack onto my earlier post.

I got my guitar back from the luthier I mentioned (Graham Parker - http://grahamparkerluthier.com/).

His work is stunning, he is getting all my luthiery stuff from now on. If you are in the market for stuff, at least check him out.

Man, wish I had seen this on the JEM/UV Guitars forum - where everyone else advertises necks for sale / request

Ah well, saved some cash for something else I suppose. Woulda been nice to do something with a neck like that though.

Make sure you post pics of the finished product jim!
