Why different inlays for the DBK? - ... I loved the vine

I don't know if this had been covered before but does anyone know why Ibanez changed the inlays to the screwhead for the DBK from the vine on most other Jems?

The screheads were a carryover from the BSB which had them. Alot of the expense in the 7v is in the inlay, allowing a cheaper inlay alowed a cheaper List Price.

also the orignal 777s had pyramids, which i'd like to see a return. The hex were a feature of the 'industrial jem' (aka the BSB) and the DBK seems like a natural followup, especially since they involve lower cost than vines/pyramids... glen

I read somewhere that it's paper or plastic or something scary like that.... any truth to that?

i forget if they are painted or papered underneath the clear *pyramid inlay to get the color. Very effective cause it allows the fretboard to be radiused properly. Most custom JEM necks (ie CGW, INC) were painted on the underside of the clear inlay... glen

I'll take plastic, save a tree!

Most of the inlays are a pearloid, form of plastic AFAIK, but on a 7v you have a mix of pearloid and abolone (the small leaves). The pyrimids were clear plastic with colored paper backing.

I think that they are way to plain... I'd probably send it for custom inlaying to replace the screwheads (if I ever get a DBK, that is)

I agree, I love my DBK except for those inlays. *I would rather have plain dot than the screwheads, they look kinda cheap and cheesy to me. *

I don't own one, but I like the screwheads. *It's new, it's unique, like most JEM/UV innovations, I've never seen it done before.

IMO the dbk models would look wierd with a vine or pyramids. Besides I like the screw inlays.

Hmm...maybe ATD could swirl the backs of some inlays, so you could get a swirled pyramid or vine?

The pickguard on the DBK is a see-through plastic piece with reflective foil on the under side. Can you imagine having a vine inlay done the same way?

Why different inlays for the DBK?

I would much prefer if they were actually chrome screw heads as opposed to the paper graphic. Additionally, when setting the inlays in my DBK at the factory, they allowed a little sawdust from the fretboard to get in under the clear plastic on two of the inlays and it looks like hell. I would like to have the paper "screwhead" inlays removed and replaced with real chrome screw heads, but I imagine the cost would far exceed the questionable benefit, and the process could result in a change to the fingerboard I don't like, so the papery-sawdusty-crappy-looking ones stay.

I read somewhere that the screw head inlays were Steve Vai's idea.
