Would you get your 777 signed ?

Hey guys,

I've been on the hunt for an early 777 and i've found one but they've had the body signed by vai (under tone knob). I've found myself umming and arring about whether this is such a great thing... Personally
i'd have had it signed on the back. But i wanted to know what you guys think.
Does it add or detract from the aesthetics of the guitar ? How does it affect value?

Cheers

Re: Would you get your 777 signed ?

hmmmmmmm... well I have my guitar signed by Vai, but I got to meet him after a concert, hung out back stage with him and the band, got my guitar signed, drank a scotch and coke, and basically had the best time ever. Vai asked me where I wanted it signed and I said its completly up to him.. Right under the knob in that little space next to the trem..

I reckon for me its a reminder of a great evening and time in my life... Id never sell it, and probably get buried with it :P

If your happy to play the guitar on stage, with the autograph, the most people who know who vai is, will just think your a mad fan... Thats about it... do you want that ?

Only on one of the control covers, never on the paint.

Signatures on the front of the body decrease the resale value markedly.

Re: Would you get your 777 signed ?

My DY is signed on the back of the headstock. It was there when I bought it and it doesn't bother me much there.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of autographed guitars and the autograph can actually decrease what I'm willing to pay. I definitely wouldn't pay *more* for an autographed guitar, especially when it's signed on the front. I think it kind of ruins the look of the guitar.

Most sellers consider it to be a selling point though, so your mileage is going to vary.

When Steve signed my UVMC (thanks Dave), he signed it on the front. I asked for him to sign it on the back of the headstock, but oh, well. Actually lookis like a strange part of the swirl.

Cheers,
Butch

This is a common fallacy that still seems to get a lot of mileage for some reason. Perhaps at some point in time, autographs held some value, but perhaps that was at a time when they were harder to obtain? Celebrities didn't used to have autograph signing sessions where they just sat and cranked out hundreds of autographs at a crack.

When people throw autographed guitars out there at inflated prices, all they do is sit indefinitely.

Yeppers.

To the OP - it affects the value depending on how YOU feel about the signature. Do you like the signature where it is? Are you comfortable with the price? If you think the guitar is worth what the seller is asking, then by all means, go for it! If not, it's probably best to hold off and wait for another deal.

Do you ever see yourself selling this guitar? If you think you're going to be attached to this guitar and basically make it your own, I say get it!

Re: Would you get your 777 signed ?

The same concept applies to repainted guitars. You would think that it increases the value but it doesn't. A mint condition refinish doesn't bring the value back to that of a mint condition guitar. You do it for yourself. If you value having a pristine-looking guitar, then the refinish is worth it, but an original guitar, even with some flaws, would sell for more.

Re: Would you get your 777 signed ?

If I was getting one of my guitars signed I'd probably just say 'sign it wherever you want' because it was being done for me. If it was one I was buying, I'd prefer it be on the back because there wouldn't be a personal connection and I wouldn't want to be reminded of it everytime it came out of its case. That's just me though.
