$15 dollar paint job.

When i got this 540P2, Somewhere down the road it had already been stripped and sanded down to bare wood. Then they gave it a maroon paint job.

when i got it I cleaned it up and noticed that originally it was DESERT YELLOW.... I couldnt believe that someone had sanded off the DESERT YELLOW original paint job.

I went to the hardware store and bought a white primer and Yellow flourescent spray paint and Clear enamel spray.. all $14.69.

It looks pretty decent.. I buffed it down between coats. I will see how long the paint job withstands. This is all temporary. I plan to get it professionally painted back to Desert Yellow. But i may even try to take on the task myself. I will eventually experiment with the flourescent yellow from HOUSE OF KOLOR. Buy that will be after summer.

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

Looks really nice, at least seeing it through the computer. If you want to complete the look, go to Michaels and get a sheet of the Fun Foam by Creatology. I just did that for my 540P that I took apart to do a little work on. It's been repainted by the previous owner and he didn't put the foam back in. Bad pic, but here's a quick one.

By the way, I assume that you're modifying the lower horns on these, right? None of yours look like factory bodies.

Great job, bro! I guess I don't need to send you the new AlaskaBat's Step-By-Step DIY Guitar Refinishing E-Book for Christmas...

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

"Don't think the DY body is original" from Ibatuer.

Ibatuer it is the 540p2 original body. I think you are getting this 540P2 confused with the other 540P2 where i had to make a body for it. here are the pics.

I will test to see how the paint job holds up. i would buff it down some more to get it ultra smooth.. but the wifey has made jokes about me spending to much time rubbing that piece of wood.. lol..

(Note for Jack Secret!... Dont worry this is not the Red 540P2 that you sold me 2 weeks ago! lol... I will never alter that one!)

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

Hey guys.. to clear about the Ibanez 540P2 manufactured bodies.. both the 22fret and 24fret 540p bodies have the same outline dimensions and size. The 24fret 540p2 body has a deeper cut into the lower horn in order to accomodate and access the 24fret neck. There is a graceful look to that lower horn. I noticed that some replacement 540P24 bodies dont have that "graceful lower horn" look. some of them look bulky and goofy.

Also I gave the DY body a direct mounted bridge pickup look..

So now you know have a great day..

Beautiful guitar DG and excellent work!!!

I have to ask if the neck is original?? I don't remember the "custom made" inlay on any of the P2's.

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

The DY 540p2 neck is original. its a 1990. You dont see many around with the "CUSTOM" inlay in the 21st fret. The neck plays wonderful. when you pick it up and play?? it feels like you are playing nuthing but fretboard!

Thanks for the compliments guys...
I will say this the trick for the paint job was:
get a solid base of WHITE primer Sand it down utlra smooth and flat.
1 or 2 thin coats of the flourescent paint.. (IMPORTANT!! make sure it goes on EVENLY)
if you put too many coats of Flourescent paint it will not seem as bright. The lighter the flourescent, the more brilliant it comes out.. The White Base Helps the Flourescent Yellow reflect more. DOnt wet sand down the FLourescent Yellow.. if you do? the Brightness will be uneven and darker in some spots.. (I had to sand down and start all over.)

THen you wet sand every Clear coat of RUSTOLEM CRYSTAL CLEAR ENAMEL.. just make sure you dont sand though to the Flourescent Yellow.

Im gonna paint the Other one . Flourescent Orange just for fun.

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

rustoleum has the best primers, but duplicolor has the best/hardest clear Ive used so far (Ive used about every clear that comes in a can ). The only issue with duplicolor is it goes on really thin. If you want to take your time, I believe you will get a better result with it.

Re: $15 dollar paint job.

Thanks linuxpenguin for the info about Duplicolor.. i will try it out instead of the rustoleum clear coat. Like i said before, its all for fun and the results are good. Im pretty sure someone from a pro shop is cringing while they read this post. lol..

Hey Corey j. Grieve. a while back I had this neck up for sale. since i had 2 540p2 necks.. then i decided to build the body for it. I am glad noone bit on that sale.. i would have been kicking myself for years..

1990 PII's sold in Europe seem to have it. '88 and '89 did not. The 540P (US model) was only sold with a 22-fret neck in '89 and '90.

I hate to really beat a dead horse on this point, but the body on dgabriel's yellow PII has to be modified. There are no catalog shots that support a lower horn cutaway like that. They also wouldn't have direct-mount pickup routes. The bottom of the cutaway is lower than the 24th fret. It was never this way on production guitars:

If the thing had already been stripped and painted, it was probably modified at the same time.
