Question .011 - .070 for Drop-A?

Hey,

I am using an RG7321 tuned to Drop A (AEADGBE), and at the moment the high 6 strings are d'addario 10-46 and the 7th string is a 0.060. Now, I calculated the string tensions based on the individual lenghts of the strings, and found out my Low A has about 2kg less tension on it than the rest. It does feel a bit more floppy aswell.

So I am planning to put on D'Addario 0.011 - 0.049 and a 0.070 for the low A, as i like the feeling of about 8-9kgs of tension (i tuned my guitar up some steps to check it out). The low A would have about 8kg of tension on it, pretty much the same as the other strings.

Nevertheless, I am concerned about warping my neck sideways. I am aware I'll have to adjust the truss rod and most likely intonation, but the way my guitar is set up right now, when looking down the edges of the neck it seems like it is more bent on the side of the 7th string than on the side of the high E. This might be an optical illusion and the guitar just plays fine right now, but maybe having even more tension on the low A will make this worse.

Am I about to destroy my guitar?

well, I use 10-52 strings with a 70 for my low B on my RG7321 and I don't have any problems, yet at least. They are 5 piece necks and seem pretty sturdy.

nope. no problem at all. I use 10-52 + 70 for ADGCFAD tuning. In fact, the 70 feels and sounds great. Perfect for riffing and no floppiness.

a 066 will do good to for A tuning. no need to drill out your tuning peg for that 070

Re: .011 - .070 for Drop-A?

Well, i put on the new strings yesterday. The 70 didn't fit in the peg, but after "grinding" it with the old 60, it did.

I must say I don't regret it. The feel of the low A really fits my taste now, riffs and bends work a lot better.

All in all I think I've made the right choice and to those who like tighter strings I can only recommend this setup.

Yeah .70's do give you something to grab a hold of, but I used to play them in B and had no problem. But since the band has ceased, so does my downtuning (cant find anyone I know that downtunes like me, so im better of playing in the majorities tuning)
